Old MIDI Fader unit as Logic Control Surface

Old MIDI Fader unit as Logic Control Surface

2009-11-13 by k_e_moeller

Logic 8.0.2: any app that has a 200+ page manual just for Control Surfaces is WAY overengineered.

At any rate I hope someone can clarify this for me. I own an old Kawai MM16 unit.. this has 17 faders, each sending CC7, MIDI volume, to its corresponding MIDI channel.. move fader 1, sends volume info across MIDI channel 1, and so on. I do have an Edirol/Roland MIDI>USB converter cable to connect it with.

I used this extensively on my very old MOTU Performer 6 mixer screen, where all I had to do was click on an onscreen fader, which highlighted, then I'd move the corresponding physical fader on the MM16, up to 16 tracks/channels. Fader # 17 sent CC7 to ALL channels, very useful for MIDI fadeouts.

So I want to use the MM16 with Logic in a similar fashion.. I have a 12-track composition dying for hands-on mixing, only 7 of the channels need any movement.

Do I need to set up a new device in the Mac's Audio-MIDI Setup utility?

I do know about Preferences>Control Surfaces. Even reading the manual it's not clear if I have to SETUP a brand new Control Surface Device or if I can just get into LEARN mode and move through the onscreen Mixer channel strip faders. It appears I could do that, but it's unclear how to select a Mixer channel strip. Further, there's an Easy View and an Expert View.

It would be great, but not mandatory, to be able to capture the fader movements (perhaps as Track Automation).

BTW this instrumental started life in Garageband 09, and I simply opened the GB project in Logic, and everything transferred, including track automation and track audio effects such as pan, reverb and other.

At any rate, does anyone have advice for me?

thank you

I figured out part of this -

1. doubleclick software fader

2. preferences>control surfaces>learn assignment for "volume"

3. move corresponding physical MIDI fader.. it says it learns it

4. continue for all SW and physical MIDI faders

Then I can indeed 'mix' after a fashion, (except SW fader 1 keeps losing MIDI fader 1 and I have to keep re-training it)

and

BOUNCE mode utterly ignores all this so I gather I have to either LATCH or WRITE every fader move I make, so that the mix is automated and plays back properly during the Bounce.

Except LATCH or WRITE causes the faders to LOSE their MIDI connection at random, and I can no longer stop/start with the space bar.. do I have to get into RECORD mode to WRITE or LATCH this volume automation coming from the MIDI fader??

I know it's ignorance, but I really dislike aspects of this program.

any help would be most welcome!

You are not alone... I have the same issue with My M-Audio Axiom Pro keyboard. It has built in control surface tools too.
It (Logic9) seems to drop the connection the faders during automation recording. Very frustrating. Only way I get around it is to keep moving the faders continuously a little to that it thinks there is constant action and keeps them connected. Then I have the annoying job of going back over the automation and cleaning up any little bumps or dips and excessive marker points.

I have reported this to m-audio but but not got a response yet.. I wondered if there is some timeout setting somewhere but don't really know where.

M-audio Axiom Pro comes with Hypercontrol which automatically makes the necessary connections so I can't help with your other problems sorry.
Hypercpntrol seems to work great I just get annoyed with the fader dropping issue.

No replies to this same question in support.apple.com LOGIC forum.

I wonder if I should try to figure out how to add the MIDI Fader unit as a Control Surface.
