Old MIDI Fader unit as Logic Control Surface

Logic 8.0.2: any app that has a 200+ page manual just for Control Surfaces is WAY overengineered. At any rate I hope someone can clarify this for me. I own an old Kawai MM16 unit.. this has 17 faders, each sending CC7, MIDI volume, to its corresponding MIDI channel.. move fader 1, sends volume info across MIDI channel 1, and so on. I do have an Edirol/Roland MIDI>USB converter cable to connect it with. I used this extensively on my very old MOTU Performer 6 mixer screen, where all I had to do was click on an onscreen fader, which highlighted, then I'd move the corresponding physical fader on the MM16, up to 16 tracks/channels. Fader # 17 sent CC7 to ALL channels, very useful for MIDI fadeouts. So I want to use the MM16 with Logic in a similar fashion.. I have a 12-track composition dying for hands-on mixing, only 7 of the channels need any movement. Do I need to set up a new device in the Mac's Audio-MIDI Setup utility? I do know about Preferences>Control Surfaces. Even reading the manual it's not clear if I have to SETUP a brand new Control Surface Device or if I can just get into LEARN mode and move through the onscreen Mixer channel strip faders. It appears I could do that, but it's unclear how to select a Mixer channel strip. Further, there's an Easy View and an Expert View. It would be great, but not mandatory, to be able to capture the fader movements (perhaps as Track Automation). BTW this instrumental started life in Garageband 09, and I simply opened the GB project in Logic, and everything transferred, including track automation and track audio effects such as pan, reverb and other. At any rate, does anyone have advice for me? thank you karl
