I think the point i'm trying to make is that like should be compared
with like. There is more demand for pc because they are the norm

I have a good way to explain this ... look at the price of an ATI Radeon 9800 graphics board. The same board can be used on Mac or PC by reburning the ROM chip. So hardware is the same. However prices are not. The PC version is about half or two thirds. Some people buy the PC version, burn the rom for mac, then sell it on Ebay for a profit.

Now Apple has nothing to do with ATI. So why does ATI sell the Mac version for so much more? I used to see the 9000 for $79 on sale at Frys but I never saw the $159 mac version of the same card on sale. (The prices have come down since then).

it's called exploitation of a group of people for whom you have been
selling a dream for such a long time.

Here in england they say that the english are very good at complaining
but nothing more, and every year the train fares rise more than the
year before ike everything else. But they keep on keeping on because
they are comfortable with what they know.

If apple users started on mass refusing to pay for some of the apple
products they would soon rethink some of their ideas about pricing,
their third party suppliers included..

I have to agree that the differential seems excessive, but some difference
is to be expected. It does cost something to write the code for the Mac
version ROM and there are less sales to be expected to cover those costs.
Again, I still think the difference is excessive.

Not necessarily true. It all depends on which manufacturers Radeon card
you buy. The ROM data for the Mac's is twice the size of the PC's. Most
PC 9800s only come with a ROM chip big enough to fit the PC firmware.
:) I believe the Mac firmware is 128k and most PC Radeons only come
with a 64k ROM. Not all of them, but most of them.
Same with all of the 9600 cards as well.
There are also resistors you must remove from the PCB to match the Mac
version of the card. Its not just a pop it in and go procedure for
those who just ran out and got one after reading this hehe.
Time for me to get a new graphics card to replace my 32MB Radeon 7000.
Been doing alot of reading on it lately trying to avoid paying $300+
for the 9800..

Oh and the 9000 hasnt come down much from its $159 price.. Theres a
128MB version now that runs 50Mhz slower than the 64MB model, running
about $130 or so (cost on em is like 117 or so)..

How do you know it was ATI and not Fry's?
