Syncing to Flash at 12 f.p.s. problems - advice please.

Syncing to Flash at 12 f.p.s. problems - advice please.

2005-02-18 by Charles Lucy

I am having nightmare problems attempting to sync my Logic Pro 7 audio
to a Flash movie.

The cartoon is at 12 frames per second, and I converted it into a
QuickTime .mov using SnapzProX to be able to view it as I construct the
audio in Logic Pro 7.

I got everything to match perfectly in Logic, and the duration of the
audio and the cartoon match at 1min 17 seconds.

First I tried bouncing it as 24 bit aiff, and converting to mp3 using
ITunes.
It seemed to work when the mp3 was inserted into the .fla and published
as an .swf.

BUT ........

As soon as I put the file onto the net using Dreamweaver, the sync
slips out.

On my 12 year-old son's advice (He did the visuals) I consulted:

http://www.newgrounds.com/flash/audio.html

which suggests that I use .wav format when adding the audio to the
visuals in Flash.

I rebounced using .wav at 16 bit.

Same problem with sync.

The flash movie piece in question is at:

http://www.lullabies.co.uk/lullsvideo.swf

and the audio is at:

http://www.lullabies.co.uk/Vid18FebMix.mp3

The baby sneeze at the end of the Haitian lullaby is supposed to be
synced to the pi lightbulb appearing above the Professor's head

What is the best way to bounce from Logic, and get it to work right?

Any help/advice on how to get this Flash cartoon to remain in sync as
it is looped is appreciated.

Thanks

As soon as I put the file onto the net using Dreamweaver, the sync
slips out.

I have no clue, but I would guess Logic would not export video with audio synced. Did you check Macromedia (Dreamweaver) for FAQ? They also make Flash and Fireworks for web animations. You might also try to put the animation and audio in iMovie that comes with Apple.

not sure if you got an answer yet, but here goes...

first off - are you using a preloader in your Flash movie? doesn't seem
like it.

if not, that could definitely be the problem.

it seems like the Flash movie (swf) plays right away, but keep in mind
that Flash needs to load the audio file!!!

so while the animations may start at frame 1 and you have an action to
play the audio file at frame 1, the animation will probably move ahead
while the audio loads in the background and only start playing when
it's fully loaded.

so i think that if you add a preloader function that doesn't begin
playing both the animation and audio until everything is loaded, you'll
have a better chance of keeping in sync.

one other thing to play around with is which layer the audio file is
on, i.e., is it on a layer above or below the animations? when you
publish a Flash movie you have the option of loading the movie frames
from the bottom layer up or top layer down. I believe bottom up is the
default. So if the animations start playing first (even though you've
added the preloader), you may want to move the audio layer below the
animation layer. Or, if the vice versa is true, do the opposite.

i think the key is a preloader, as it seems the audio file is quite
long in duration and doesn't loop.

I checked out the SWF and i think you guys did a great job! nicely done
:)

another point...

if you scored the clip using Logic while viewing the SWF as a MOV,
chances are the MOV file may have converted the frame rate to a more
standard 30fps (or the ungodly 29.xx fps "drop frame"). I'd be curious
to know how you scored the various hit points. were you using Logic's
movie track? I haven't used that function so I don't really know if
Logic does some behind-the-scenes conversion of frame rates.

hope this helps! again, kudos to you and your son for a job well done :)

Hi Charles,
It's not the file type that matters but how you set the output in flash.

There are 2 major types of sound in Flash
1) Streaming
2) Event

When you click on a keyframe on the timeline - you will see the option
in your Frame actions window.
Streaming sounds will lock to frames - this is what you want.
Event sounds are good for ambient stuff that doesn't need to lock to
picture.

I hope this helps.
