g5 and crashes

g5 and crashes

2005-02-22 by GAmoore@aol.com

I just want a stable system to get some things done. Thats why I just invested a couple of grand more on a G5. I installed everything fresh - absolutely no shareware or demos. I even held off on installing PSP Mix Pack after someone told me it can cause crashes.

So I created a new songs... and the first crash went to Garritan Personal Orchestra. I repaired permissions and ran the sudo maitence routines. I could not get Garritan to even sound.. it sounded if I used the mouse with the onscreen keyboard but when I played my real midi keyboard the keys onscreen appeared depressed but no sound. So I removed GPO. Then I got another crash ... this is with one virtual instrument, 2 midi tracks, one drum loop, and one audio track.

I'm at my wits end. I guess the only other thing is to disable the supposedly valid plugs - starting with Garritan.

Have you changed the MIDI channel in the Garritan/Kompact (or whatever
it's called) inst. window?
I am always having to scroll the MIDI to the proper channel or set it
to "Omni".

Thanks for the suggestions. Yeah the first thing you learn about GPO* is to constantly move the mod wheel back and forth. I made little 1/4 note loops with that the mod wheel to max. I also checked the midi channel in logic. I'll try yet again.

May I ask, do you not have any crashes when using GPO? it seems to definitely be the cause of crashes before and now. I wish he would port those samples to EXS24 so we would not have to deal with the NI player.

(other than "don't ask questions about GPO. If this is your first time using GPO you WILL have a crash."... kind of a joke if you have ever seen Fight Club)

I don't have crashes with GPO or any others. Or, I shouldn't say no
crashes ever, but none traced to a particular plug in. I have all
kinds of demos in my components folder, some that never launch in Logic
so I wonder if it's something else.

Do you use OS 10.3.7? That's where I'm at now. I may go for the
update to .8 but I usually wait about a month and check for horror
stories.

Have you repaired permissions? I try to avoid doing that more than
once a month or two but sometimes it seems to clear things up.

I'm going to rent Fight Club. I've been hearing it mentioned like 3
times this week!
Good Luck,
-Glenn

I just thought of this:

http://www.nativeinstruments.de/index.php?kontaktoemupdates_us

It's an update for GPO / Kontakt Player. Maybe you've tried it?

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
