New Pics/Sears Point Vintage races

2002-06-04 by Don Lattimer

Hi all,

Went to the Sears Point Vintage races last weekend and Mark Petrinovich
showed up on Sunday with his Marcos (the British Car Mag cover car).
Took a few pics which I have posted in the "photos" section.

You can see the WIPAC driving lights I just installed on my car. Great
day watching the Lotus Elans eat up the Cobras, etc. Lots of interest
in our cars and lots of comments on the Brit Car Mag article. Also met
a gent who had seen the Mantis XP in San Ramon, CA about ten years ago.

Hope you all had a weekend as enjoyable as mine! This week it's down to
Hayward, CA for the Brit car show. Hopefully Mike, Mark, and Stephen
will show also.

Don,

Do you find the lights affect the cooling on your car? I onced took
part in a 'classic car run' where we had a plate fitted to the nose
(directly over the top of the central air intake and extending down
to cover about 10-15% of it) and the engine ran REALLY hot. As soon
as the event was over, I took the plate off and the temperature
returned to the normal rather warm! :^)

On the subject of 'what I did this weekend', I can't quite compete
with Sears Point (Although I was lucky enough to be there last year),
but I got to a lovely warm Brooklands on Sunday. Richard Porter
(Mini Marcos Owners Club) was there with his Mini Jem (he'd been to
Scotland in it the previous week - no mean feat, I'd imagine.), which
is a derivative of the Mini Marcos, and there was also a metallic
burgundy Mantula coupe there (looked rather smart too), but I didn't
find the owner.

Overall, the event was a bit low key this year (A few traders were
bemoaning the poor turnout on Saturday and Sunday), but the really
good news is that Brooklands (including the remaining banking) now
has 'historic monument' status, meaning the rapidly encroaching
business park won't be allowed to swamp the remaining parts of the
circuit.

If you ever come over to the London area (or anywhere in the South,
really) or live in the UK, I'd really recommend a visit to Brooklands
as it has some great (and ever improving) exhibits (both motoring and
aeronautical) and the ghosts of the pre-war racers are palpable as
you stand on the banking.

Cheers,

Mark

Hi Don,
The lights look great! I might have to think about putting some on mine.
But.... that would mean sorting out my wiring.... Maybe not!! ;-)
Thanks for the pics and it sounds like you guys had a lot of fun!

The lights have not affected the cooling at all. I also have a Lucas
"pusher fan" (which is disconnected at the moment), a radiator overflow
bottle, and the heater fan blocking the air intake! My car has a four
row (core) radiator and I installed a 12" Flex-a-Lite fan in place of
the original fan. I've not had any cooling problems. Last weekend was
fairly warm (80 degree F) and the temp gauge didn't move higher.

This weekend it's supposed to be 100 degrees F at the Hayward show!
Good test!

Hopefully I'll make it to England some day. I would love to see some of
the tracks and also attend a Marcos event.

The new (?) 1981 Manual you posted Jeff has the exact schematic that I
needed last week! Nice to find out I was correct in my assumptions.

Don,

I went looking for the photos but couldn't locate them. Where exactly are
they posted?

Thanks,

Paul

Go to the Yahoo MarcosManiacs site:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MarcosManiacs/

and on the left-hand side of the page is a column that has "chat",
"files", then "photos". Click on photos. It's the last two photos of
the grouping.

Thanks Don. Unfortunately I can't get there from here because my employer
has Yahoo as a restricted site. I thought the Yahoo and Greyraven sites were
mirrored but that's apparently not the case. Oh well, I guess I'll have to
wait til I go home on the weekend.
