Regarding the exhaust pipe my 1600GT has a flange that bolts to the exh
manifold / downpipe asy and a flex pipe about 10 inches long is welded
directly to this flange before the pipe run extends back to the rear
silencer. I do not know if this arrangement is as standard or a
fabricated replacement system. If anyone else has a flex or knows if
this is original and needed I would be grateful for their input as I
will also have to replace my system soon and it will be easier to do
without a flex asy. As for the radiator my one also looks very similar
in design to the cortina Mk1 1500GT and cortina Mk2 1600 although I
cannot be positive without a direct comparison.

Hi all
   The approach I took to the limited ground clearance probably isn't
for everyone but it worked for me........I ran pipes straight back 
as close to the trans tunnel tubes as I could terminating them just 
where the rounded part of the trunk pan ends, from that point I went
with SUPERTRAPP mufflers .....they are approx 18" long and can be had
in 3",3.5" and 4" dia.This style of muffler may suit some of you guys'
who race as the diffusers(discs) in the end can be added or removed
to tune sound and performance. They are available in stainless as well
as painted black with stainless internals. The sound might be a bit 
RASPY for some but it is infitely tunable.

We were in danger of going off into what we call "Anorak land" over 
here; how did we get from exhaust systems for a 1600 35+ year old 
designed engine to inserts in place of mufflers to make my car "Drag 
race legal"??????

The inserts were only a suggestion in order to alleviate the 
clearance problem some of us encounter.  The inserts are also for 
street driven vehicles.  Sorry for any dis-information!
