Tire choices

2005-06-14 by marcos5463

Maniacs,

As I am working on the restoration of 3M 5463 and have already
rebuilt the dash, suspension and other ancillary parts, I wonder if
there are any suggestions as to a 185/70 13 tire thats HR rated, as
I have the original alloys? I'm (planning, at least) that I'll have
the car finished by the end of the year and as I like to obtain the
parts I need for a restoration before I actually need them, any
suggestions would be appreciated.
Any other owner history on my car would be appreciated, as well. I
have the documents from Marcos Heritage, and have looked at the
email postings here, but there is a big gap from the first owner
(president of Ford Motor Company) to the first Maniac owner.

Thanks,
Hampton Peterson

Hampton,
Tire rack doesn't list any "H" rating in that size. I think you'll be hard pressed to find that rating. They have 13 different tires in that size but they are "T" or "S" rated. The Pirelli P400 Touring don't look too bad though.
One of the reasons I went to the 16" wheel/tire combo was the increasing unavailability of 13" tires.
Some of the specialty tire places will have what you want but they also want your first-born for payment.
I looked at your car in Portland and the owner told me he had bought it from someone back east, maybe OHIO? Other than that I don't have any history on the car.

Hi Hampton,
I have used 175/60hr13 on original wheels with no problem. This results
in a slightly smaller rolling radius but as you probably have a 3.54 rear
end that shouldn't be a problem. On parts, I am shipping a container next
week with lots of Marcos parts, so if you need anything Email me and I can
include it if I don't have it already.

RE: [MarcosManiacs] Tire choices

2005-06-16 by Robert Carroll

For what it's worth, mine arrived with Yokohama V-rated AV1-60i rubber
on it. The fronts are 195/60R13 and the rears are 205/60R13.

These look fairly new, but I don't see this model listed on Yokohama's
web site. I can't speak for their performance because I haven't had it
on the road yet (wood chassis repairs pending).

You might try www.1010tires.com <http://www.1010tires.com/> . I've
never purchased from them, but it looks like they've got a better
selection of 13" rubber than www.tires.com <http://www.tires.com/> . It
would be a shame to pull the original wheels.

RE: [MarcosManiacs] Tire choices

2005-06-20 by Dransfield, Paul

Hi Hampton,

The 185/70 tire has been used by many people as a replacement for the
original Avon 175 but it's disadvantage is that the smaller rolling radius
causes the speedometer to over-read and the car to sit around 1/2" lower. I
had Michelin 185/70 HR ZX tires fitted on my original Cosmic 13" rims for
years until my recent switch to 45 ratio tires on 17" rims. The new tire has
the same rolling radius as the original and it fits the wheel well more
aesthetically. Handling has improved significantly and the new rims
certainly freshen up the look of the car.

As Don Lattimer stated, 13" tires are harder to come by in the
specifications required. I'd suggest you give consideration to larger rims
and lower profile tires, though you would likely have to replace the front
hubs because 3 3/4" bolt circle wheels are hard to come by in the larger
sizes. If you do switch rims, be aware that the backspace varies with the
width of the rim so careful measurements of your current setup and
clearances should be made to ensure a proper fit.
