Hey Guys,
I was wanting to pull the ol Marcos out this weekend when
low and behold the brake pedal pushed to the floor and barley stopped me. When I
opened the master cylinder the reservoir was low. Now the ?, What is the heck
does "Girling" mean. In context.... Use only Castrol Girling fluid. this is
what the cap on the master cylinder says. I assume it is the British
equivalent to brake fluid. Or brake company wanting me to use only their product.
Anyway is Dot 4 all right then?

Thanks,
             Hal

Hal,

British brake systems use a rubber that is not
compatable with most of the fluids sold in the US.
The LMA Castrol Girling DOT 4 fluid is what most of
the British cars, like your Marcos, can use with no
problems at all.

THere is a lot more information on the different types
of brake fluids available. There are schools of
thought as to what is best to use in various
applications. I have been using the LMA Castrol in my
cars since the early '70s and have never had a failure
due to brake fluids.

If your car has been sitting you may need to bleed out
the whole braking system to bring it back up. If the
system will not hold a seal you may need a rebuild of
a cylinder or two.

Check the colour of the fluid. If it is black, it means that the rubber seals in the system are deteriorating due to a reaction with the existing brake fluid. Flush the entire system with DOT 3 brake fluid that is compatible with natural rubber.

Most non-britishcars use seals made of synthetic rubber andrequire ordinary brake fluid.

I use CASTROL LMA Brake Fluid (Low Moisture Absorbant) in all my british cars. My friends do the same.

LOCKHEED and GIRLING DOT 3 Brake Fluids are appropriate but are notreadily availableat the parts store. But specialized shops for british cars (MOSS; VICTORIA BRITISH; WELCH; etc) carry them.

Use the same fluid for both, brake and clutch systems.

Hope it helps.

Pat Emery
