Crimson's Trons

Crimson's Trons

2004-01-12 by mellotrongirl

My my, aren't they the most lovingly fret-upon mint/unplayed looking
machines you ever saw? Apparently handled by the most painstakingly
meticulous airport baggage handlers and rifle range caretakers in da
business. How intimadating in particular the Mk2's to Streetly
refurbishers these machines must be. (I'm sure they've seen much
worse).

Cool the linked KC website has pictured the autographed LP's. I
figure if one of our members had Pinder sign the lid to a M-
400...makes me wonder if Fripp is just as approachable. I have my
doubts, yet I should dare myself to challenge the Ft. Knox
security 'Crimson envelops when they perform live.

Y'know--the only autographed LP's I have is a High Tide "Sea
Shanties" with Simon House's signature on the back, and Nik Turner's
on the debut Hawkwind. These two totally sociable guys will chase you
down for their autographs if they knew you were walking along the
street with Hawkwind swag.

Good lord! Fripp brags about how rude and or erratic he gets around fans
looking for autographs. He's legendary as being completely dead set against
interacting with fans. Someone waving a Mellotron lid or side panel at him
wanting it autographed could potentially set him off. You may need that lid
to defend yourself.

ha! yeah - his aloofness is legendary. [some would say rudeness]
a friend ran into him in an elevator at a record label back in the 80s.
he asked him: "aren't you robert fripp?"
fripp said "no - you are mistaken."

i find this attitude kind of odd.
if you don't like fans then why release your music for public consumption.
you should be a plumber or an electrician or an auto-body worker...

this is also in direct contrast to a meeting i had last week with what
i consider a real legendary person. i met gerry anderson last week.
some of you are probably too young to remember thunderbirds, fireball
xl5, stingray, supercar, captain scarlet, but might vaguely recall
space 1999 or UFO [the tv show - not the band].
he is a gracious, humble, inceredibly pleasant and approchable man.
and he even knows what a mellotron is:
"you mean one of those things that has all the tapes?"
i had him sign all my japanese box set thunderbird laserdiscs.
he did it quite happily, and remarked how some people hate to sign
autographs but when people STOP asking then you have to worry.

And do you know where the SFX for those programmes were made? None other
than Grosvenor Studios in B'ham where a lot of the Rime takes were done. We
initially started to make tapes at Grosvenor before getting kitted out ourselves.
John Taylor is credited on Thunderbirds, Stingray and Fireball. He was Les
Bradley's closest friend and is now over 80 years old. The last of the the
true masters of analogue recording and a nice bloke.

There's a couple of nice pics of Les at Grosvenor Studios
surrounded by lots of bits of tron and tape making equipment on
Kean's site. Is this where most of the tron recording sessions were
done?

What I don't get is why anybody would care to meet Fripp in the first
place...

Thanks,

I had a much more pleasant experience about 15 years ago when I boarded
a small commuter flight to Jamestown and had Chic Corea sit down right
next to me. He had no problems answer questions and conducting a very
interesting conversation for about an hour... What a nice, open person
he is.

AD: Systems Theory downloads available @ soundclick

2004-01-13 by sdavmor

A quick update:

In support of the "Soundtracks for imaginary movies" album, we've
got 12 MP3s up on our soundclick page (more will be uploaded over
the next 24 hours). What's there right now is both of our given-away
demos sets ("Demos 1999-2000" and "Demos 2001-2002"). You can access
these either as a lo-fi mono stream (great for modems or checking
out on a PC at work), a hi-fi stereo stream (very good quality if
you have the bandwidth), or as 128kbps stereo MP3s for downloading.
Due to space format limitations a couple of the longer tunes are
versions that are different mixes/edits than have been made available
before, and one tune ("Serengeti Surprise") has been broken into two
parts.

The band page (info, blurb, etc):
http://www.soundclick.com/bands/9/systemstheory.htm

The music page (streams, downloads):
http://www.soundclick.com/bands/9/systemstheorymusic.htm

If you choose to "stream all" in either lo or hi-fi mode, you'll
hear the tunes in this order:

("Demos 1999-2000")
01) Under Oriental Skies
02) Breakdance In Hell
03) Where Titans Sleep
04) Strange Obsession
05) The Boy Who Gazed At Stars
("Demos 2001-2002")
06) Silent Service
07) One Step To Freefall
08) Serengeti Surprise (pt 1)
09) Serengeti Surprise (pt 2)
10) The Cool Vibe Of Asia C.
11) The Reluctant Plumber
12) Red Sun Fading

Feedback to this thread, or on the soundclick message page, would be
appreciated (pro, con, indifferent).

[Mellotronists] Re: Meeting the masters

2004-01-13 by John Hofmeyer

Re: Chick Corea...

I used to run sound in a small club in Iowa. The
venue catered to blues, jazz, and 'under ground/alt'
rock. Chick Corea's Electrik band made their way
through and I was fortunate enough to have the night
off of work (so I could enjoy the show).

With such a small club, the backstage accomodations
consisted of a staging area for theatrical events -
pretty humbling, really. Taking advantage of my
status as an employee, I spent about 40 minutes
talking to each member of the band. Each of them were
very friendly, answering our (...my roommates came
along, too...) questions - none too trivial for
response.

Apparently, on that tour, Chick included a Yamaha Baby
Grand as part of his rider. ...no can do for that
venue - but the performance was outstanding,
regardless. In that same week, I saw Yes (Union tour)
and Rush.

All that musical fascility and talent in the course of
a week - but no Mellotrons!

Very cool, Jeff! Nice to know he's a 'decent sort'. Going further off topic
for a mo', any idea whether the live-action film is going to be any good?
Flashy trailer, and Blur's 'Song 2' isn't the first piece of music that
springs to mind...

Actually, he did not. Maybe that is why he was so nice... We spoke about
the difficulty he was having getting his old CD's released. We also
talked about Return to Forever and his (then) new project with GRP
records (the Electric Band). Oh yes, we also talked about playing
techniques on the Moog and Rhodes.... other than that it was pretty dull
:)....

the subject DID come up, but he did not want to elaborate on it.
all he said was "that's not mine, it belongs to universal".
my guess is he just licensed it and is not entirely pleased with
the direction the project took...
i know they had to go back and re-shoot some material, but i don't
recall the reason given...
[ben kingsley as "the hood" is perfect though!]
i have mixed anticipation. it will be really cool to see what
they can do with modern technology, but i don't know about frakes
as a director, and there is a lot of controversy regarding the
"fab one" NOT being a roller [rolls royce], instead being based
on a ford thunderbird [note: ford is discontinuing the line after
next year!]. i am far more excited about the new captain scarlet
series being produced in hi-def 3d cgi. i have seen some stills
and it looks amazing!! [but i can't elaborate too much on that
myself, at least not for a couple weeks... ssshhh... 'tis secret]
