MK2 or Chamberlin?

MK2 or Chamberlin?

2005-03-29 by Jack Younger

Hey folks!
I know this is going to open some debate, but I would love to get some serious
feedback/opinion on this quandry. Given a choice, what would be the advantages of
owning a MK2 over a Chamberlin 600/660, and vice-versa? Which one would you
pick and why?

I would pick the Mellotron MK2. I assume that it is a problem getting
parts and/or service for the Chamberlin 600/660.

The resale market would be larger for the MK2. When you make a big
purchase, it's nice to know that you can sell it and get your money
out of it quickly.

I know that a number of the Chamberlin voices are appealing. If you
want Chamberlin voices, you can have MK2 or M400 tapes made up.
(Personally, I think that there are more than enough great Mellotron
voices to choose from).

Greetings Jack and everyone,

I own an early Mellotron (MK1 #124), and wouldn't part with dear "Julia"
for all the tea in China (or beer in England) , but would love the opportunity
to "tinker" with a Musicmaster 600 . After all, the Mellotron was derived
from that model. Chamberlin tapes had an interesting mix of SFX as well
as the lead sounds .

One appeared on eBay a few years ago I believe . Their weakest link
(pun intended) was/is the cycling system. The Musicmaster 600 for me
would purely be a collector's /restorer's instrument for preservation .
While the MK2's are made to be played ........

I cannot offer detailed tech insights on the Chamb-600 , only the MK2.
....Wish I could .......

Cheers, -- JK -- (tinkering with 1960-era German SW radios at the moment)
