[Mellotronists] Strawberry Fields... again!

[Mellotronists] Strawberry Fields... again!

2006-06-30 by Herman Ringer

YES! Illumination at last!!!
I wondered all my life what the heck that strange sound on the left channel right after the first "´cos I´m going to...". It´s nothing more and nothing less than the Mark II (or is it Mark V´s?) Guitar. It´s also the sound that makes the pitch drop (and NOT the flute, like Paul showcased so many times).
A friend passed me a copy of the old Ultra Rare Trax Vol II, and there´s a great version with many basic takes. And lots of tron in each one!!!
have fun!

Sorry, but I think you may be both wrong. According to ITV's 'the South Bank Show' 1992, it's a real slide guitar, recorded actually on the vocal track itself. Sir George Martin (for it is he) is demonstrating what sounds are on the 4 track tape.

Best wishes,
David.

David's right, definitely a real slide guitar on there - but there
*is* also MkII guitar present...the latter isn't doing any pitch
swoops though, it's just the same note being repetitively tapped away
on the keyboard for a few seconds after ''cos I'm going to..' and
before 'nothing is real'. It's quite subdued so it's a bit more
difficult to really pinpoint in the commonly-available mix but it
appears more noticeably in some earlier takes / mixes. If you can get
to hear any of those you'll see what I mean.

(I'll get my anorak....)

...except this time it isn't, though it is another "what tron sound is
this?" question (and not a Watcher of the Skies Bass Accordion in
sight!) -

I've uploaded excerpts from two 60s tracks in the Files section and
I'm not altogether certain what these sounds are. Maybe one of you can
shed some light on them:

1) Amen Corner - "I Am An Angel (But I Can't Fly)" - I'm sure most of
it is MkII , I suspect it's reverbed MkII trombone on the part when
Andy Fairweather-Low sings and again at the very end, but there's
another sound I can't quite make out which appears before and after
the vocals, could be violins but doesn't quite sound like the MkII
variety. Then again it was from 1968 so there's a possibility it could
be an early M300 appearance. See what you think...

2) Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band - "Humanoid Boogie" - (I love this one!) -
in the instrumental break: definitely a MkII left-hand keyboard
accompaniment tape, presumably Cello and Violin (Moving Chords), but
from previous research I've done, apparently there are two instances
of this sound on different stations on the MkII, and I'm trying to
find out which one it is, so that I can get it for one of my future
tape frames - any help, MkII owners? :)

Thanks!
