QTR, OS X and Epson PX-5V (Japanese version of R3000)

2012-09-25 by Dean Johnston

Hiya!

Long time since I've posted here, years in fact, so a little background (& a re-intoduciton I guess).

My name is Dean and I live in Japan. I've just come back to digital printing, after returning to the darkroom for several years. I used to use QTR on a Windows machine with an Epson PX-G5000 (Japanese domestic market version of the R1800).

Now I'm using a Mac (OS, drivers, etc. up to date) and my new Epson PX-5V (Japanese domestic market version of the Stylus Photo R3000), and the standard Ultra-chrome Vivid Magenta inks.

I just downloaded the latest version of QTR for Mac. Things are different from what I remember in Windows. As far as I can tell, one has to run the appropriate install scripts for one's printer from the appropriate folder within the "/Applications/QuadToneRIP/Profiles" folder.

However, I see there is no option for "PX-5V" (and also no profile files in the equivalent R3000 folder). Running another script, say the R3000 one, just gets me "Cannot find an Epson USB printer with the name R3000" (under Windows I could use the R1800 setting for my Japanese model).

So, it sounds like I can simply re-name a / the generic install script from the "/profiles/InstallScripts" folder to something like "InstallPX-5V" and stick it a like-named folder. Is this the case? I wonder, will the dash in the Japanese name make things awkward and appear like an extra descriptor?

Also, what would I do about profiles for this new folder? Copy the ones from / for 3880, or R2880? Something else?

Sorry for the long post, and thanks in advance.
