QTR, OS X and Epson PX-5V (Japanese version of R3000)

QTR, OS X and Epson PX-5V (Japanese version of R3000)

2012-09-25 by Dean Johnston

Hiya!

Long time since I've posted here, years in fact, so a little background (& a re-intoduciton I guess).

My name is Dean and I live in Japan. I've just come back to digital printing, after returning to the darkroom for several years. I used to use QTR on a Windows machine with an Epson PX-G5000 (Japanese domestic market version of the R1800).

Now I'm using a Mac (OS, drivers, etc. up to date) and my new Epson PX-5V (Japanese domestic market version of the Stylus Photo R3000), and the standard Ultra-chrome Vivid Magenta inks.

I just downloaded the latest version of QTR for Mac. Things are different from what I remember in Windows. As far as I can tell, one has to run the appropriate install scripts for one's printer from the appropriate folder within the "/Applications/QuadToneRIP/Profiles" folder.

However, I see there is no option for "PX-5V" (and also no profile files in the equivalent R3000 folder). Running another script, say the R3000 one, just gets me "Cannot find an Epson USB printer with the name R3000" (under Windows I could use the R1800 setting for my Japanese model).

So, it sounds like I can simply re-name a / the generic install script from the "/profiles/InstallScripts" folder to something like "InstallPX-5V" and stick it a like-named folder. Is this the case? I wonder, will the dash in the Japanese name make things awkward and appear like an extra descriptor?

Also, what would I do about profiles for this new folder? Copy the ones from / for 3880, or R2880? Something else?

Sorry for the long post, and thanks in advance.

Hi again.

Well, I tried what I wrote about above (renaming the install script to "InstallPX-5V," but got the following back.

"ALERT! **** QuadToneRIP does not support printer PX ****"

So, looks like dash is causing problems. Removing the dash just got "does not support printer PX5V" (as I knew it would).

Any ideas what I can do about this?

Thanks.

Hi yet again.

Okay, so I think I solved my first problem.

In System Preferences, I simply made a new printer, appropriately named. Doh! Then the script worked, but said it was "unable to create curve folder." I just made that manually and ran it again, and that seemed to work (I used copied curves from the R2880 folder, as the R3000 folder was empty apart from the script - hope that's right?).

Now QTR comes up, and the profiles are present. Good so far.

Now I've hit another snag. The printer keeps telling me "The media loaded does not match the settings selected." Seems no matter what I try, both from Aperture 3 and the new QTR Print Tool (which worked great for colour) nothing is happening. So, either I'm not doing something right (chances are), or the install didn't go as smoothly as it finally appeared to.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Dean

Hi Dean

My name is Kentaro Kumagai.
I am using PX-5600(R2880)Japanese model.
It succeeded in installation R2880 curve.
And I am using it.

But,I have heard the talk that "PX-5V" becomes an error.
I will ask the Japanese user.

Hi Kentaro.

Thank you for helping me. I still can't get QTR to work.

Actually, I found your web site the other day, when searching for possible answers to my original question. That's where I found the tip on creating a new printer named "R3000" (etc.). Thanks for that.

Hi Dean

The error was solved in Japan User.
Please check the under.

1.Print & FAX
Add New Printer. Printer name must be "QuadR3000"
   (A space does not enter)

2.Choose the Printer Driver "QuadToneRIP 2.7 Epson R3000"

3.R3000-UC Folder
For example, Please copy profile txt file(ex UCmk-xxxx.txt) R3000-UC from R2880-UC.
Run "InstallR3000.command"

The Japanese user was mistaken in Printer Name!.
Please check on that.

Hi Kentaro.

Thank you very much for the information.

I'm really busy at work just at the moment (started doing junbi at 5:30 this morning!), but I'll try it on Sunday and let you know what happens.

Thanks.
