The gray ink limits are determined with the first Calibration Mode print,
and I use that first Calibration Mode print to measure the densities of the
gray inks at their ink limits.

Those gray ink limits are compared to a second 21-step test print of the
black ink at it's ink limit, which was also determined from the first
Calibration Mode print. Most people print a full second Calibration Mode
print at this black ink limit.

(I use another approach to save some paper. I use a manually-drawn
straight line curve to print a separate 21-step test print. You'll see
curves like this in my various Profile Zip files, named things like
"K-0-45," for example, as the straight line curve that prints the black ink
from 0 to an ink limit of 45.)

I hope this helps.
