Thanks for the great information Brian.  Much appreciated…especially by those of us who are a bit older and not completely comfortable with various operating systems and the implications of migrating from one operating system to another.

Updating drivers should not cause problems with 3rd party carts.  But on no account should you update the printer firmware.  Nor should you install Epson software that offers you the option to keep your printer up-to-date automatically because this will update the printer firmware and may well cause the printer to stop accepting 3rd party carts, if some reports that I've seen are correct.  Be very wary of software installs from the CD.  Generally I download and install only the latest printer driver and no other Epson supplied bloatware.
