I suspect that the cause is taking an insufficient number of readings at the black end of the scale to accurately find the point where the max density is reached. I just manually tweaked the 90% and 95% measurements in the linearization step, arbitrarily boosting them so that they were closer to the 100% measurement, fooling the software into lightening them a bit.
