QTR curve creation with FSN inks

2005-06-24 by Johnny Eades

I've discovered a full set of MIS FSN (NOT ut2-fsn) inks and have
created a paper curve (neutra) for EEM paper. There was a question I
need an answer to about the curve creation. I designate all the inks as
gray inks (none as toner)and print the calibration steps--read with my
densitometer and calculate the percentages of ink laydown for each
one. Then I linearize the readings. There still seems to be something
wrong in that the high values (Zones VI-VIII) are still too dark on the
print. Any suggestions?

When I made a curve for the UT-FSN inks, I had a similar problem. I suspect
that the cause is taking an insufficient number of readings at the black end
of the scale to accurately find the point where the max density is reached.
I just manually tweaked the 90% and 95% measurements in the linearization
step, arbitrarily boosting them so that they were closer to the 100%
measurement, fooling the software into lightening them a bit. Fortunately,
you can get away with stuff like that in B&W that you could never do in
color.
