If you are using the linearize feature of QTR, you could, when you are entering the densities of the steps into the linearization process, overstate the density of the steps you would like to lighten and understate the density of those you'd like to darken. Not very scientific, but those are my immediate thoughts, until I or someone else thinks of a more structured approach.
