Bronzing for Various Glossy / Luster Papers R800 / R1800

2009-11-04 by Terry

I had 7 glossy / luster papers and wanted to see the bronzing effect on each. I printed out the Quadtone Rip Ink Separation Test Page on each which shows 21 steps of increasing ink densities.

I've let the papers dry for 3 days and visually viewed at an angle under an Ott-Lite which is supposed to be 5000-5500 degree Kelvin.

While somewhat subjective there are some clear differences with the Epson Luster being the worst re bronzing. I now see why so many posts here regarding the amount of Gloss and or spray required to reduce the bronzing on the PK ink for glossy/luster papers on the R800 / R1800 printers and especially the Epson Luster. All were printed 2880, uni-directional, and adaptive-hybird on my R1800.

I looked at each printed paper and the % where I thought the PK ink was not "bronzing." was noted.

Imation Photo Jet – None (maybe 5)
Ilford Classic Pearl (Black Box) – 20/25
Ilford Smooth Pearl (Red Box) – 25/30
Harman Gloss FB AL – 25/30
Ilford Gold Fiber Silk – 35/40
Innova Fibra Print – 40/45
Epson Ultra Premium Luster – 45/50 (when observed right after printing it was 60/65)

Does anyone have any data on other papers? I'd be interested in the Harman Crystaljet Luster RC paper.

Comments appreciated.
