basics for a beginner (dummy?)

basics for a beginner (dummy?)

2012-02-27 by Marja Beckers

Hi All,
Im a newbie when it come to qtr, but having color cast problems printing my b%w photos from photoshop cs5, it seems that this might solve my problems.

I have spend the last few days trying to get my head around qtr, and I think I get the drift. I have gone through the userguide, and looked at the curve creation tool.

The problem Im still having is that I cant seem to find how to get a good b&w print using qtr, photoshop cs5, and an epson r1800, printing on Ultra Premium Photo Paper Luster, and Epson Premium Semigloss Photo Paper.

I just cant get my head around asigning curves (MatteBlack, sepia, and cool?), or how to create the right curve for my paper.

Can anybody give me some practical information on this?

Hi Marja,
Are you using a Windows PC or Macintosh - it makes a big difference!
(also which version of the operating system).
Also are you using the usual Epson inks in the printer?

having had a quick look at the QTR control file for the R1800, its
really intended for matte papers - do you have any Epson Enhanced Matte
(or similar) to test it on?

Hi Mike,
I replied to your message earlier today but I don´t see my answer appear. Guess I did something wrong :o)

I´m using windows 7 64bit, and the default epsons inks.
For my photography study I need to be able to print b&w on semigloss, gloss, and matte papers (not necessarily epson).

The strange thing is that I have printed b&w on this printer before, but now I only seem to get all kinds of color casts.
I´m hoping to use qtr to solve this problem at last.

hope you can help!

kind regards,
Marja

The best reference for QTR on Windows that I'm aware of is Tom Moore's
paper at http://www.quadtonerip.com/User%20Guide.pdf even if it is a few
years old. The current version of QTR and Windows 7 64 bit still work
the same way - thats what I use. (I asked because there are other
problems with newer versions of MacOs and Photoshop.) If you are looking
at instructions written for the Mac you'll get hopelessly confused as
the printing mechanism is totally different.

The biggest problem may be getting the Gloss Optimiser in use for gloss
papers - I've no idea how you'd do this, as I've never had a printer
that uses a GO.

I suggest you read through Tom's paper, and try to follow through to
printing on a matte paper from that, and ask if you have specific
questions from that. Extending that to printing on a semi gloss or gloss
paper will be harder, and need help from someone who's done it - there
are two issues you'll need to deal with - getting GO used, and also
adjusting the amount of colour ink(s) to to be added in.

Most QTR users are using the printers with multiple black inks and/or
using specialist monochrome inksets

My reading suggests that it is virtually impossible to get a "NEUTRAL" B&W print from either an Epson 1800 or 1900..They were designed for COLOR printing..That doesn't mean you CAN'T use it for B&W, but there are better alternativs such as the 2880, 2400 or the new 3000..The Epson 1400 utilizing 3rd party B&W inks is a GREAT monocrhome printer IMHO..(I have 2 of these..)
Just my 2 cents..

Hi Eddie, I recently found out the r1800 isn´t very good at b&w.
Unfortunately buying a new printer is not an option for me.
The r1800 is too expensive to just throw out as well.

I´ll try qtr first :o)
