Install Profiles with QTR in Windows 8

Install Profiles with QTR in Windows 8

2013-03-21 by SandyK

Hi,

I am a MAC OS 10.6.8 user in the process of teaching an alternative printing workshop to a person who uses a Windows 8 operating system. I use QTR to print digital negatives. I create my profiles with the text.edit program on the MAC, save the files to the Profile folder of QTR for the printer, then run the Install Printer# command. This installs the .quad file in the proper folder.

Can someone describe a simple step-by-step procedure that I can follow to help this student use my profiles, either the .txt version or the .quad form, in Windows 8? I have managed to show her how to download QTR and get it installed on the Windows 8 PC, but beyond this I am totally lost with the OS.

Thanks in advance.

Sandy

Hi Sandy

I do not use Windows 8, but I do all of my Quadtone digital neg profiling and printing from a Windows XP partition. The text edit file that you create on the Mac side is equivalent to the .qidf file on the Windows platform. If you change the file suffix from .txt to .qidf, you will be able to open the file in the Quadtone RIP Graphical User Interface on the Windows machine. Probably a good idea to make a copy of the profile
first. When you save the ink descriptor file (.qidf) out of the Curve Creator (in the "tools" menu) it will save a .quad file in the Quadtone application files.

On machine, the .qidf files are located c:\program files\quadtoneRIP\bin

And the .quad files are located: c:\programfiles\quadtoneRIP\Quadtone\Quad3880

Hope this helps.
Gary

Sandy,
To edit the txt files on a PC, I use TextPad. I use this app after your advice on switching ink positions on my 3800 piezo ink printer. You should have your student check that the QTR print dialog runs on Window 8. As of a couple of months ago, I could not get it to run properly. It does however run on Windows 7. The QTR website states that version 2.7.2 supports Window 7, but Win 8 is not mentioned.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
John

Sandy,
PS: if she gets the print dialog is running properly on Window 8, let me know.
Cheers,
John

My thanks to Gary and John, and to an off-list response from another person. With the information you have provided I should be able to get the txt/qidf files installed on the PC, if Ver 2.7.2 even works with Windows 8.

Re: Install Profiles with QTR in Windows 8

John,

She was able to get QTR up and running with Windows 8, including use of the GUI interface for curve creation. And we were able to print through QTR on the Epson 3888.

There appear, however, to be a couple of bugs, as some operations would result in putting the computer into some type of freezing. We were able to get out of these problems without re-booting the computer, but in comparison to working with MAC 10.6.8 the few small bugs with QTR and Windows 8 were very irritating.

Sandy,
Thanks for the feedback. Yes, very irritating which is why I've stayed with Win 7. But glad to here it worked out.
