QTR and OS X Mavericks

2013-10-24 by <graeme.l.mitchell@...>

I've installed Mavericks OS X 10.9 on a machine I print from. I had to reset my printers and scanners in the system preferences. When I went back to reinstall the QTR printers (both UC inks and K7 inks) the terminal command gave me this error:

"ALERT! **** QuadToneRIP does not support printer 9880 ****"

Boy oh boy, this is an unexpected headache. Anyone have any thoughts?

Hi all Mac Mavericks,

I've started looking at QTR on Mavericks and there are a couple issues. I think the problems
are all a Privacy and Security additions. OSX now has a Sandbox concept for applications.
The idea is to keep an app's hands off other stuff. It actually started in Mountain Lion but is more informed now.

As of now the QTR driver and code is not setup for Sandbox. So there are a couple issues
that cause trouble.

1) You do have to re-install the QTR software -- re-run the Install-QTR-2.7.2.pkg

2) The printer install scripts can't create a printer but you can do that in Sys Preferences > Print & Scan.
Read the Tutorial.pdf (last few pages) for manually setting up a Bonjour printer. Using this same scheme
for instance create a printer named Quad9880 and Use the QTR 2.7 Epson 9880. Add the printer.
Then go run the Install9880 script to install the curves. (for K7: name Quad9880-K7, use QTR 9880).

This should get you the right printer setup.

3) Another issue is that the print dialog page is not Sandbox'ed so if the program you are printing from
is sandbox'ed you don't get the nice page. So far PS CS6 is not sandboxed so that's probably ok
and QTR Print-Tool also will work. Most of Apple's programs probably won't but they are not used for
printing B&W usually.

I think this should get people running well enough for a while.

Roy,

For my 3880 with UC inks this worked easily.

For my 9880 with K7 inks, I was able to create the printer (QUAD9880-K7), but I can't get the K7 curves to install.

I tried running the install9880-k7.command script and I tried to drag the install9880.command to the k7 curves and run it (that was my translation of your writing "(for K7: name Quad9880-K7, use QTR 9880)."

Neither worked.

Using the k7 command terminal gives me this:

"/Applications/QuadToneRIP/Profiles/7880-9880-K7/Install9880-K7.command ; exit;

Installing QuadToneRIP Curves Printer Quad9880_K7

Curve 4880-7880-9880-CansonRagPhotographique

Any ideas?

I figured it out.

That Canson Rag Photographique curve (supplied to me my inkjetmall) the install hanging up on had worked previously, so I'd never assume there was anything wrong with it. I opened it in text edit and it looked fine. Then I cut and paste the first line from another curve into it (literally cut and paste the exact same text) and resaved it...and, drum roll, then it installed fine. Figure that one out. So strange.

Anyway, back up and printing!

Thanks for your help Roy. Really appreciate it.

Hi Roy,

Thanks for the guidelines (and the great software), I reinstalled QTR, created a quad9880 printer as you described, but still the same message.. guess I'll revert to 10.8

You need to match the printer names and the install script names.

You are running Install9880-K7 so the printer has to be named Quad9880-K7

Re: QTR and OS X Mavericks

2013-11-06 by clayharmon47

Hi all,

I have had a hell of a time getting Mavericks installed on my Macbook Pro - I ended up having to do a complete erase and install and then using Migration Assistant to move things over. At any rate, I had to reinstall ALL printers, which included QTR.

As Roy points out, most of the problems stem from permissions issues in the continuing attempt by Apple to lock things out of sight on the system. Here is what I had to do to get my R3000 hooked up using its wireless interface:
First problem is a permissions problem. Open Terminal window and navigate to /Applications/QuadToneRIP/Profiles/EpsonXXX directory

Then type sudo InstallRXXXX.command

It will either install or you will get an error like this:

	Installing QuadToneRIP Curves Printer QuadR3000
Couldn't open /etc/cups/ppd/QuadR3000.ppd for reading: No such file or directory

This means that for whatever reason, the silly .ppd file is gone. You need to put it there.

Open a Finder window using Go->Go to Folder... and tell it to go to /etc/cups/ppd

in the terminal window type ls -al

You will _not_ see the QuadR3000.ppd file in here. Leave this terminal window open on your desktop.

There is something hosed up with the Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks permissions that will not allow the ppd files to expand properly. You will have to outsmart Apple and all its nanny-state rules.

So now open up a separate Finder window and type in Go->Go to Folder.. and then type in /Library/Printers/QTR

Open up the ppd folder and double click on the appropriate .ppd.gz file. In my case QuadR3000.ppd.gz and it will probably decompress into your Downloads folder.

Now navigate to your Downloads folder and drag the decompressed QuadR3000.ppd folder to the /etc/cups/ppd folder. The system will ask you for your password.

_Now_ you can install the printer properly. Go back to where you began, and open up a terminal window and navigate to your install script, e.g. cd /Applications/QuadToneRIP/Profiles/EpsonXXX

Type in sudo InstallR3000.command, give your password at the prompt and you should be in business. If you have a networked printer, you will have to supply the Install script with the network IP address.

It shouldn't be this hard..

Re: [QuadtoneRIP] QTR and OS X Mavericks

2013-11-06 by marc de blieck

Hi

Roy, thanks for the help, changing the printer name to the proper "Quad9880-K7" solved the problem, it was as simple as that simple in my case.. The only problem left is that printing on custom size paper (44” wide roll paper) didn’t work - the printhead only covered 8” instead of 44”, but printing A0 worked fine.

RE: QTR and OS X Mavericks

2013-11-09 by <george.lemasurier@...>

I'm just setting up my new iMac, which came with Mavericks OS. Reading all the trouble getting QTR to work should I step down to 10.8?

I'm currently running 10.6.8 on a 2008 iMac, and I've got QTR running smoothly. I print from Photoshop CS5 mostly.

Thanks,

G

Re: [QuadtoneRIP] RE: QTR and OS X Mavericks

Hi

Made it trough Mountain Lion (10.8.5). QTR is running smoothly and I bought QTR Print Tool since Photoshop CS5 does not offer the "No colour management". Heard that with Adobe Printer Utility you can do it.

Since I'm working in B&W with an Eb6 configuration, the match with QTR and QTR Print Tool is hard to beat.

Reading on Mavericks, an upgrades who seems to help a lot of newcomers with cloud integration and system tweaking, I will stay with Mountain Lion.

I worked with Leopard for a very long time (and still do once in a while) and I don't really go with the "upgrade madness

QTR and manual front feed on R3000

2014-02-05 by Alan Vlach

We keep getting an error on the printer that the media doesn't match the setting when attempting to use the manual front feed option with the R3000. Anyone else run into this problem and is it fixable?

Thanks
Alan

RE: QTR and manual front feed on R3000

2014-02-19 by <torchbone@...>

I'd love to get a clue about this issue - I can front load "fine art media" on the R3000, but no matter what setting I chose in the QTR print dialog the printer gives an error that the media doesn't match.

The other solution I've heard of is to increase the dry time between head passes a tiny bit, but that also does not seem to be an option when using QTR. If I am missing something please let me know!

As it is I can't print any salted-paper digital negatives due to the amount of ink they lay down, which is quite an issue since I'm supporting a class of seven students.

Thanks!
