Hi - I have an Epson 2200,have purchased the piezography NK7 inks for it and am trying to learn how to get the best prints I can out of the combination. My question is, which would be better to use for the ink set when preparing my pictures with photoshop cs2 - gray gamma 2.2 or gray-lab.icc? This is my first post here (I've been lurking for a couple of months). Bob Hove Robert@...

Bob I've been using the K7's on a 2200 for a month now and have been getting good results using QTR GrayLab as a working space. I'm on a PC, so when I'm ready to print I convert to QTR GrayMatt and save as a Tiff and then open in QTR gui. Select the paper curve, dither option and 2880 (leave the Ink Limit and Gamma at zero). Another option rather than converting to QTR GrayMatt is to leave your image in the QTR GrayLab space and set the Gamma to +4 or +5 then select paper curve, etc. Neither of these two work flows is perfect but either will give you a taste of the K7's capabilities. For what it's worth, I've tried using Gray Gamma 2.2 as a print space and not had good results. I realize GG2.2 is the recommended print space according to the instructions, but for what ever reason it just hasn't worked well for me. Will

Will - thanks - that helps a lot! I have found the instructions that come with QTR confusing, so your description of your work flow was just what I was looking for. I have made several prints with the K7's that were very impressive just converting to gray scale and saving as a tiff, but I'm looking to improve the way I work. Thanks again! Bob _____

Where are the instructions for using the NK7 inkset? Also -- if possible -- could you tell us a bit about how the inkset compares to what you were using before? I'm currently printing on a 2200 with QTR and the UC inkset. Considering that Epson carts go for $8.90 from Atlex while the NK7 carts go for $16.95, I'm hesitating.... I've seen a few good, but fairly brief, reviews; still like to see more info. I imagine printing with the NK7 ink with QTR is no different than any other ink set. > -----Original Message----- > From: QuadtoneRIP@yahoogroups.com [mailto:QuadtoneRIP@yahoogroups.com] On > Behalf Of Chris Hargens ... > > Where are the instructions for using the NK7 inkset? Also -- if ...

Chris The instructions come as a Quick Start Guide with the Neutral K7 inkset. Prior to using the K7's, I used QTR with the UC inkset through a 2200. The first thing I noticed with the K7's was the stark neutrality - beautiful and revealing with no distracting color cross overs. Images have a richness and depth that I just couldn't quite achieve with The Ultrachromes. The only complaint that I have is actually a backhanded compliment. The K7's show so much smoothness and detail that they're showing the flaws in my scanning that didn't seem so obvious before. As far as being able to shift the tonality, the K7's are a bit more limited here than using a color inkset, though the shift that does occur (by switching paper tones) looks more subtle and integral to the image - K7's have tonality radiate from the image vs. UC's have the image composed of tonality. Hard to describe. I've got four prints on my walls that were printed last year by Custom-Digital <http://www.custom-digital.com> and I've been chasing their quality ever since. The Ultrachromes always looked a bit crude to me by comparison to these prints. The K7's look like they belong along side of them. Will
