Printing QTR through Lightroom

Printing QTR through Lightroom

2013-11-23 by <kjrslr@...>

I've been away from the "darkroom" for a while but now that the winter winds are blowing, I'm getting back to my B&W printing. I'm running Win7-64 and utilize LR for 95% of my workflow. In the past I've had to print through the QTRgui but continually read about people printing QTR through LR but only thorugh mac os's. Will QTR ever be able to print through LR on a windows platform?

It would be great if it was an ordinary print driver. I guess there's some possibility of it running
that way but it's not imminent for now.

Could you use the monitored folder option in qtrgui and output the print
image to a file in that folder? (Helpful if you're printing a batch with
the same paper and curve etc. qtrgui settings.)

Thanks Roy. I'm just trying to understand. I'm not that tech savy but I guess my question should be why can't QTR print through LR on on a Window OS but it can on a Mac OS? Or what is it about the Mac OS that allows this workflow(to utilize QTR through LR) but not a windows OS? Is QTR for Mac's that much different than Windows?

The problem is that the printer driver model on Macs is very different
from that on Windows, and offers capabilities that the Windows printer
drivers don't have. Qtrgui embeds an implementation of the same printer
driver model that the Mac OS contaions (technically, it embeds a
gutenprint driver) and ignores the Windows printer driver interface.
Lightroom on the PC uses the Windows printer interface, and so won't
work with the QTR code.
It's not really that QTR is different, but that the Windows OS and Mac
OS are very different when it comes to controlling printers.

Mike

Thanks for the expaination! I've never used a Mac so I didn't understand the reasoning as to "why not".

In the early days when QTR and the QTRgui for Windows were developed
(and I already had a custom Epson 9000 Quad 44" printer) I asked whether
a hot folder in QTRgui would be possible. So that folder became
available. I used it with a large printpage in QTRgui and a slightly
smaller (sans QTR's print margins) print page in Qimage Pro. That way I
could nest several images of different sizes on the print page and use
the QTR RGB profiles in Qimage's CM. The last had its issues too though.
Print to File setting in Qimage with printer path settings enabled, so
much of Qimage's print enhancement features worked. It was not the
easiest route but the quality was there and economy in using paper rolls
not lost.

No longer Epsons here but HP Z printers with their own B&W approach that
I can combine very well with Qimage Ultimate. Never regretted the
purchase of QTR and still using the B&W profile creation of QTR.

From time to time I did suggest here that QTR should be available as a
true Windows driver with QTR's flexibility still aboard. For some to use
it with Lightroom, for others with Qimage Ultimate.
