Really basic guide for beginners?

I've never set up a printer before (other than plug and play devices using standard settings) so I'm finding getting started with QTR pretty challenging.
I thought I would try QTR having seen a Paul Roark article where he talks about using an Epson 1400 with Claria inks, but using QTR to reconfigure it so that it is just printing with black and light magenta. For now, that's all I want to do, but I can't even get started! In part that's because I'm on mavericks.
I downloaded the latest installer and the Mavericks patches. I installed and I then substituted the quadtonepde.plugin. I then find there are four scripts in the Mavericks patches folder, which I presume I am meant to use instead of the scripts in the profiles folder. But none of them seem to relate to my printer? So what am I meant to do please? I'm guessing I am supposed to take one of them and edit it to meet my printer requirements?
I tried the Install1400.command in the original install, but that fails, reporting
Installing QuadToneRIP Curves Printer Quad1400
Couldn't open /etc/cups/ppd/Quad1400.ppd for reading: No such file or directory
I can't find anywhere a tutorial or help which assumes no prior knowledge. Everything I have found goes straight off into technical detail. Is there anything available which will help me get started and talks about the principles involved, please?
I'm sorry to be asking such a basic question, but we've all got to start somewhere!
