Epson ultrachrome K3 LK and LLK dilutions

Epson ultrachrome K3 LK and LLK dilutions

2014-10-22 by amog19@...

Hi Everybody,

I have a pint of MIS Eboni black K4-PT-K pigment ink and clear base (for 1,5 pl droplet size) available that I want to experiment with - and that I want use to refill my R3000 K, LK, LLK as long as I am fokusing on those three channels. Does anyone know the exact dilutions for LK and LLK as Epson applies it? I read in Paul's Eboni-4-plus article the references 18% and 6%. Can I work with this? While I work with QTR I still want to be able to use Epson's ABW driver - it is still smoother than my own QTR curves :-) So I don't want to mess up ABW with wrong dilutions.

Thanks and Regards,

Amin

The dilute Eboni "LK" and "LLK" inks, at 18% and 6% Eboni, respectively, are estimates only. When I printed 21-step test prints with the Epson and MIS LK inks, and then compared them to various dilutions of Eboni printed on the same paper, it became clear that the ink density curves were not congruent. As such, I had to pick a single point to match, and they would only match each other at that point (and the paper white, of course). It also turned out that the MIS LK does not match the Epson LK.

In addition to the density curves not being the same, the Lab A and B are different among the inks. Eboni Lab B may actually be closer to Epson LK than is the MIS LK, which has a higher Lab B than either. On the other hand, the Epson Lab A is probably less than either (too green looking for B&W, in my opinion).

The net result is that while the ABW printing works with other inks, the various calibrations (profiles) Epson has made for its inks don't fit as well with the other inks.

Remember also that Eboni is for matte paper only. It rubs off of glossy paper.
