how to deal with graphics in a post

2014-11-24 by paulmwhiting@...

Near as I can understand, a Yahoo! group does not allow graphics, either inserted in the text or as attachments. I also checked out some of the entries in the "Files" section here but the ones I saw did not contain graphics.

How would it work for users if I used links to Dropbox for my graphics? What I want to upload is a file on:

"Using a flat-bed scanner to measure ink densities and linearize a curve in QTR"

With the help of another individual we've developed a method that, with care, obtain results that are quite reliable. The text is about two pages long when printed out but it does contain a couple of screenshots.

Regards,

Paul

Graphics or images shouldn't be a problem in the files section. A PDF file will be the easiest way to bundle that information.
Wonder what paper white clipping of scanners does to curves in the highlights.

Thanks, Ernst,

I'll check the files section again, I guess I overlooked the PDF files. Not that I doubt you, please understand! I just want to see what they look like.

Not sure what you mean by "Wonder what paper white clipping etc" means... the process I'm describing does not use a scanner.

Now I've got to figure out how to convert my file to pdf. Currently it's in txt but can be saved as a Word file. Are there on-line services that will do that conversion? Must be... I'll have to check.

Thanks again,

Paul

If you use Windows, I use CutePDF writer ( http://www.cutepdf.com ) if I
need to create a PDF. It installs as printer driver, and can be used
with any tool that uses the windows printer drivers to print.

Thanks, Mike, I'll try that.

Just got done Googling on "convert to PDF" and found one that works ok, it's www,fastpdf.com. But I want to try yours as well. I'm starting with an Open Office .odf file and the font is courier - I want to change that font to Roman or something more familiar.

Thanks again,

Paul

Checked my systems. Libre Office on Ubuntu has PDF export. Open Office on Windows too.

Ernest,

Beautiful! So simple! I was trying to do a "Save As" of my OO file, I didn't think to do it as an "Export As...". Worked like a charm. Now I'd like to get rid of that Courier monospace font. I should be able to do that in OO before I do the Export As...

Many thanks,

Paul

Just tried Roman, got some weird font, next tried Arial and that was fine - I'll stick with that.

I probably picked the wrong time to complete this project, my wife and I are preparing for the weekend. But after Thanksgiving I hope to be able to upload the pdf to the Files section.

I'm excited to post this, because it's a process that measures densities quite accurately using an ordinary flatbed scanner, Open Office Calc (or Excel, of course), and plain old PS Elements. It's that final step in Curve Making that seems to be a stumbling block for many folks, myself included of course. That's the step where you insert the Densities in the empty 21 squares. No need for a densitometer.

Stay tuned everyone!

Paul
