how much of an advantage ... a general question regards the R2400

2005-10-13 by Godfrey DiGiorgi

I just purchased an Epson R2400 to replace the 1270, which has been
dedicated to B&W printing with MIS UT2 inks and QuadToneRIP for a
couple of years. Since I needed to do an operating system overhaul
anyway, I took the opportunity to reinstall everything from scratch
which means I now have *only* the Epson R2400 software and profiles
installed. I'm standardizing on Epson Heavyweight Matte and Enhanced
Matte for general printing with this printer (likely one higher-grade
paper as well: perhaps one of the Hahnemuehle or Moab papers, or
Epson Velvet Fine Art), and I print a lot of B&W work.

What I'm interested to know from others who have gone to this
printer: How much of an advantage have you seen from use of QTR over
the Epson driver for B&W printing? So far, my tests on the Epson
Enhanced Matte paper have proven to show very good quality. I'm just
unsure as to how much additional benefit would be had from going to
QTR at this point ... It is a godsend for getting decent B&W out of
the 1270.

I am using the 2400 with the ABW Epson driver and getting very good
results from it. One part of the QTR that I would highly recommend
is the QTR Create ICC Profile. Use of the ICC profiles this produces
both essentially linearizes the printer and provides a softproof view
in PS. You do need an Eye One Photo to use this however. There has
been much discussion of this approach on the BW Digital Print forum.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint/

If you look in the QTR folder, you will find an Eye One folder.
There is a file there explaining how this is all used.

P.S. If you do this, use the Create ICC from QTR 2.3.0. The file in
2.3.1 has some problems which Roy is working out. When that is done,
it offers the additional advantage of actually being able to Soft Proof
paper color, which is remarkable. In the meanwhile, 2.3.0 is excellent.

wwodets,

I am looking to do exactly what you are describing below, so I went
to the files section of the DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint group. I
found the QTR folder, but there is no Eye One folder underneath. Do
you, or anyone else for that matter, have this information or know of
another place I can find it one the Net or in a Yahoo Group?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, and thanks to everyone for the
wealth of knowledge I am only beggining to go through now.

Steve

Steve

You need to download and install QuadtoneRIP. The Eye1 folder is within the
QuadtoneRIP installation folder under \Program Files (on a PC, of course, on
a Mac it's different). You can get QuadToneRIP from here:
	http://www.quadtonerip.com/html/QTRoverview.html

If you like it and intend to keep using it (even just the ICC profiling
part), don't forget to reward Roy ($50) so we can all continue to benefit
from his hard work.

Steve-
You can download the program at:

http://www.quadtonerip.com/html/QTRdownload.html

On the PC, if you install the program and go to Program Files\QTR\Eye
One, there is a a program called Create ICC. You drop the I1 Measure
Tool text file on the program and it creates the ICC profile in the
directory to text file was in.

You are welcome to email me if you need more help.

Walt

Walt,

Thanks for clearing that up for me. I will be intalling QTR this
weekend, and my Eye-One comes next week. We will see how I fare then.
If I need any further assistance, I will take you up on your offer of
help.

Thanks again,

Steve
