QTR inkseparation image embedded profile Problem in Print Tool

QTR inkseparation image embedded profile Problem in Print Tool

2016-01-19 by Charlie Baggett

I am on my first attempt to perform ink linearization on an Epson 7600
printer. I am using Selenium inks #2 through #7 from Inkjetmall. The Photo
Black slot contains Flush. My goal is to produce digital positives/negatives
for use in making copper plate gravure and palladium prints.

I am using a Mac Pro with OSX El Capitan and Photoshop CS6 along with QTR and
Print Tool. Here is my workflow. I open the QTR inkseparation.tif image in
Photoshop. I get a text box that states it is an untagged image and offers me
options for profiles. I choose Leave as Is (don't color Management). I label
it as 'Epson 7600-100-6 Ink' and save it back into the QTR Image folder. I
open the Print Tool. The Printer box shows Quad7600-K7. I press the + sign to
add an image and select Epson 7600-100-6 Inks. The image opens and shows an
Imbedded Profile of sRGBIEC61966-2.1. I can't figure out where the Untagged
image gets this profile. In Photoshop I have set up the policies under Color
Settings to preserve the embedded profile. I suspect cockpit trouble but can't
see what I am doing wrong. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Charlie

Macs and Adobe force color management behind the scenes even if you don't want it. It has been that way sense at least OS 10.6 (maybe ealier, but I skipped 10.5). It's one of those reasons people poopoo Apple and Adobe, but there is a perfectly easy and inexpensive work around (that makes the process easier anyway).

You need to print the ink sep images with either print tool or Epson color printer utility. I'd recommend getting print tool, which Roy developed. It's a 50 dollar program worth a lot more than what he charges for it.

Hope that helps,

I'm sorry, but I haven't had coffee yet when I read your post. You are using print tool....

I think there was some point that when you saved the ink step image in Photoshop the box that says save with srgb was checked (your working space?) just open it back in Photoshop, make your changes to the ink sep image and then when you save as... Make sure you don't have the check box with "embed color profile" at the bottom of save dialog box checked.

In any case printing in print tool with no color management should ignore whatever embedded color profile embedded is in there and should print fine. (Haven't tested that is a while yet though...)

Sorry about the confusion in my last message.

Richard,

Thank you so much for clearing this up. I didn't check the lower box which is
what confused me since I still got the embedded sRGB profile. I checked the
top box- Leave as Is. I suspected the issue was either Adobe or El Capitan
(I'm not a fan). However, the tutorial I was using said Untagged must be shown
in the embedded box. I did try once with CS5 instead of CS6- same result. Now
that I know it doesn't matter as long as No Color Management is selected in
Print Tool I will go ahead with my linearization. Thanks again. You saved me a
lot of time and research.

Cheers,

Just to clarify - yes Print-Tool does show sRGB for the untagged file. This is
due to OSX's insistance to CM everywhere. The standard file routines add sRGB
to files regardless. Be assured as long as you select No Color Management you
will be OK. If by chance you do something that causes a CM action the
results are very obvious so there's no danger of missing it.

Roy,

Thanks. I tried with Richard's advice and it seems to work fine. I appreciate
the clarification.
