QTR printer problem

QTR printer problem

2016-02-22 by James Hajicek

I am just getting started with attempting QTR for digital negatives but may have a problem that those using this system for positive prints may be able to answer.

I am working on a mac with Yosemite and an Epson R2400 printer. When I choose the QuadR2400 printer in the printer selection box it will never print in color as I am adding a flattened yellow color layer to the back and white densities of the negative in photoshop as per Ron Reeder's suggesting that yellow is an excellent UV blocker along with matte black. I have tried various printer profiles including the standard Adobe RGB as well as the Quad RGB but none seem to allow the colorization of the negative to print. I have Photoshop managing color

I am sending an Adobe 16bit RGB file to the printer and as I say - it prints with my color adjustment layer using the non-quad printer designation.

What am I missing in this early stage of setting everything up?

In advance - many thanks to any and all who can offer a suggestion.

Best,
James

Hi James,

It sounds like you are printing a color image, or that your otherwise b&w image has a yellow fill layer. Are you using Print Tool? You can print color images with Print Tool, but not from PS using the QTR driver.

What Ron is talking about, though, is something very different which is creating a QTR profile that uses a fair amount of yellow. You have to be careful not to use too much yellow or matte black. Actually, I think photo black is a better choice. It will give much smoother results than matte and is also easier to control.

You are going about this in a way that is very different than what Ron or any of us who have been using and refining the use of QTR for digital negatives are doing. You may have reasons for doing it the way you are, but if not, I’ll be glad to help you get onto the right track.

What printing process are you going to be using?

Cheers,
Keith

If you are tying to print digital negatives with QTR with a MAC you should be printing with Print Too, not PS, and with gray scale files, not RGB.

Are you confusing Ron's method of increasing negative Dmax by adding more yellow, as he suggests in the article he did for Chris Anderson's book. http://www.alternativephotography.com/wp/negatives/digital-negatives If so, please bear in mind that this method is designed to use the Epson printer driver and RGB files, not QTR. This method works fine, but ultimately gives you far less control that you would have with QTR.

Thanks Keith and Sandy. Yes, Sandy, I believe I did get the two methods mixed and somehow got it in my mind I should start with the max uv blockers Ron Reeder suggests in his book and then move directly into QTR after figuring out standard printing times with this matte black plus yellow colorized step tablet. Keith has suggested to me that photo black produces a smoother tonality than matte black so I will start there.

Thank you both. I will get Print Tool and print from that, and hopefully keep this new adventure for me step by step on the right track. I am sure I will have a few more questions along the way and must say this is a wonderful group characterized by great generosity by many.

Best,
James
