R2400 banding .... help needed please

R2400 banding .... help needed please

2005-10-29 by warmzone5

Hi All,

I love qtr and was using it with my epson 2200 without a hitch. Now I
have the R2400 printer and need some help.

I am getting a very small width banding pattern. I have tried
everything I can think of .... using different dithering patterns,
paper, inks, etc. I am not getting any banding pattern at all using
the epson driver in the advanced black and white mode... smooth as
silk. I am using the curves that came in the recent release 2.3.1

I would love to be able to use the QTR software because of the
incredible control it offers.

I have combed this forum in search for answers... perhaps a math issue
because of the extra nozzles and or difficulty in changing the dot
size? Roy.... can you help?

Is anyone else printing successfully on Kirkland glossy using QTR, the
R2400, and epson ultrachrome inks?

Thank you again for your time and for a wonderful software and forum,

Bill

First you need to make positively sure that there is no nozzle
clogged even a tiny amount.

You are not alone, I have also noticed similar fine banding issue with
my R2400 print using QTR (absolutely not clogging with nozzle checks).

For now, I have resorted to using Epson Advanced B/W Photo. To my
amazement, I was able to get neutral prints using one of the Epson
Premium paper types with MIS K4. More tweaks are needed with other
paper types.

I am wondering if this is a QTR issue with R2400? I have not had any
issue at all with QTR on my 2200 printer.

Hi Bill,

did you find a solution for this problem? I have the same issue with
my R2400 and QTR, also in the current Version. Printing from other
applications (Photoshop) works fine without banding. With QTR I get
the banding especialy in the border areas at begin (2-3 cm) and at the
end (2-3cm) of page.

Thx.

Hi Bill and others,
I posted almost the same question on Feb. 13th ( described in detail )
and I am now pleased to see that I am not the only one!!!!!
Christians description of the problem is identical to mine.
As I have been out of town I didn't keep up to date but I don't think
there has been a solution offered.
Maybe Roy can help as I would really like to experience QTR's full
potential as others obviously do?
Hope further posts are forthcoming and thanks to all.
Philip

First of course is to make sure you don't have any nozzle clogs.

The other difference that I see with the R2400 vs the 2200 is that it has a bigger
print head and correspondingly more nozzles. What this means is that paper
movement has to be more accurate -- over a range of one inch rather than half an inch.

Anyway banding can be a little more likely. For this reason I typically use a resolution
of 1440x1440super on the R2400 as compared to 1440x720super on the 2200.
Incidentally the Epson driver also uses this resolution in many cases.

Fortunately on the R2400 dot sizes are ideal for using the same profiles at different
resolutions. 2880 dpi is also a possibility but I don't find it necessary usually.

Thanks for your response, Roy.
I have experienced, after many weeks of trial and error, that the
resolution of 1440x1440 super is the ideal resolution and indeed, l
have noticed little, if any, benefit of 2880.
With nozzles checked and aligned I am still unable to produce a print
without the banding that a few of us are experiencing.
Are you saying that banding is likely with a 2400 and we have to
except this with QTR and/or is there a way of improving the paper feed
which may be a contributing factor?

Hi Roy,

thx. for your response. I checked the nozzles and adjusted print head
but could get no change for better. Using the 1440x1440 super or 2880
resolution didn't also correct the problem. As the printer works
correcly with other software using the original Epson driver for me it
seems to be a issue with the software. Do you see any changes to get
it fixed?
I found one way to avoid the bandig: letting a margin of ca. 1.5-2cm.
But that not realy a good solution.

Thx. & Rgds.

Using my new Mac, I just printed my first B & W photo on the R2400
with QuadTone Rip
The settings I used were 1400, unidirectional (sometimes
bi-directional causes banding.
Try those settings, clean the print head, etc.
It is not the software

2400 with K7. No amount of nozzle checking fixed it and just used ink
up at a terrible rate. I got some purging images from inkjetcarts.us
which showed which nozzle was the problem. They also have individual
color images that you can convert to grey scale and clean only one
nozzle at a time, using very little ink.As far as getting good results
in the ABW mode, perhaps the offending nozzle is not being used in your
prints. The Epson ABW uses a lot of colored ink in the printing as you
can see in the Paul Roark notes on the MIS site. Also, the refillable
2400 cartrides with the auto reset feature seem to be
working, available from inkjetcarts also. I am refilling with Media
Street inks which are for the most part O.K.,with the Magenta the
least good but within tolerance.I do not use their black
inks, preferring to stay with Epson paricularly since the PK has a
proprietary encapsulation for best results.I have two 2400's one of
which I use for K7,and the other for color and BW toning.
