Loading qidf files into QTR

Loading qidf files into QTR

2016-06-05 by homershannon@...

I am attempting to use some .qidf file developed by Paul Roark. I installed them into the file C/ProgramFiles (x86)/QuadToneRIP/QuadTone and they are showing up in my folders without any issue. However, in QTR, when I select Printing Model and the associated QuadTone folder, the files do not show up Curves Setup / Curve 1: window.

I've tried adding selected .qidf files to other QuadTone folders and I get the same thing. The new files are never listed, despite closing QTR and restarting it.

How do you get QTR to recognize the files in the folder correctly?

I answered part of my own question with this article - A Tutorial on Using QuadTone RIP (PC version) to Create Digital Negatives - Luminous Landscape

- I miss you already, Michael Reichmann.

The article describes how a .qidf has to be converted into a .quad using the create curves tool within QTR. To an extent this process works. But, after I load the .qidf into the curves generator, I cannot find any way to save it as a .quad - the only options are as an ink descriptor (.qidf) or a text file . Saved as a .qidf the file just over writes itself. How do you generate the .quad?

When you are in the curve creator module and open the qidf you just need to Click "show curve". That will initiate the create curve program and your .quad file will be in the correct quad printer folder and allow you to select it in the curve drop down print option. Unless you are on win10... In that case after you press show curve you need to wait a second for it to hang up, then close the QTRgui and then when you relaunch it should have installed the curves ok...

OK, Richard. Thanks for that. I did what you suggested and I see that the .quad file is now in the Quad1400 folder.

The next step is a bit confusing, but I think I have it worked out. Having created the .quad, when you go to print you there is no field to select it. Assuming it was already selected, I went ahead and printed a test page, which came out terrible. I then closed QTR and reopened it. Upon reopening, the print page had the curve selection bar where you can select the .quad that was just created. Going ahead and printing, I did get a print that looks something close to what I am trying to get. Now I just need to adjust all the values in the curve creation page.

One more question. When you select an existing .quad and modify it in the curves creation tool, how can you give it a new name so that it does not overwrite the original .quad that you began with? There is no option for 'save as' when you select Show Curve and it does overwrite the old curve.

This is not a highly intuitive program!

I think in win10 you can save the file without using the show curve button and avoid the system from hanging.
