Newbie With Some Questions

2017-01-11 by 4zf3vehmqbyh7duk2bvea3rwvtr5tbjmw4spfr5s@...

I currently do my black and white prints using Epson ABW mode and OEM inks on a p800 printer. The results are terrific.

However, for some images i would like to tritone the image (or at least get a better split tone than the Lightroom Split Tone feature supports) and ABW doesnt have that capability.

I am tring to gauge how easy it would be for me to use Qtr. Specifically-

1. I use Harman Gloss Baryta paper, Canson Baryta, and Epson Hot Press Matte papers. Are these three supported in Qtr For the Epson OEM inkset on the p800? I dont see myself creating custom profiles.

2. Will this interfere with ABW at all - is it relatively easy to revert to ABW or just pick either AbW or Qtr when you want?

3. For those with similar setups and use to mine - how was the Qtr learning curve?

thanks!

1) QTR driver does support the p800 printer. There are profiles that should work with the papers
you have. Note that profiles work well with multiple papers -- just use one similar to paper you have.
The only important thing is to match matte vs photo.

2) No problem using both QTR driver and ABW on the same setup. They are independent drivers
so you can select either when printing.

3) ordinary printing is pretty easy, profiling can be more work depending on what you want to do.

Downloaded and tried the program tonight. Very easy to get it to work through Lightroom (had it working within 15 minutes) but...

There do not appear to be any cool tone curves on the p800. Only Neutral, Sepia, Warm, and Warmer. I notice your version of neutral is warmer than Epson ABW neutral on the same paper...but I have no way to cool it off since there is no cool tone curve to blend it with. I copied a cool tone curve from the 3880 into the p800 folder but it didn't show up in the list in Lightroom.

Any solution?

Thanks

Jas

Nobody has offered any reply to the question. I'm really stuck and can't proceed.

Is there a reason why cool tone curves are not included for the epson p800?

Thanks

Jas

I hesitate to respond because I have a 3880 rather than a P800, and because there are people on this list who know far more about this than do I. That said, I was playing around with toning effects and curves recently and I was surprised about the lack of cool curves for the P800.

If I was in your position what I would probably do is take the P800 warm curve, which uses only the three black inks with no toning additions, and add in the toning ink parameters from the 3880 cool curve. That's at least a starting point, but it's likely to need to be linearised.

Hopefully those who do know more than I will chime in and either confirm of correct or add to this suggestion.

I created my own 3 ink profiles for the P800 and then used the curve settings from my (now dead) 3800 to create cools curves worked very well except on new legacy papers with are more neutral with the three ink combo.

I believe that the QTR product is superb - i was amazed at how easily i got it up and running with Lightroom. However the lack of a cool curve for pk ink on the Epson p800 means i can't use it for the intended purpose of split and tritone prints.

I'm not into creating curves or linearizing. It would be just fantastic if the necessary cool curve was provided by the product. I'd be happy ro buy it for the $50 if that happens and i think there is a good market of p800 and p600 folks looking to go to the next step after abw and lightroom split tone who would as well.

PLEASE add the cool curve!

Pretty simple to modify an existing curve to make it "cool". QTR has always been a bit of diy, then you can share what you have done with the rest.

Jon

I thought about that...did some comparisons of the p800 neutral vs. the 3880 neutrals, and also some 3880 neutral vs. cools. Was hoping I could triangulate a bit and come up with something.

Looks like a bridge too far for me...good number of variables in there and the papers supported on the 3880 are different than the p800 so even that's a variable. I'll waste a lot of ink and paper and not be satisfied.

One good cool profile for Premium Photo opens up a lot of p600 and p800 market for this program...!

By rare coincidence I happen to be working on my new p800 so I was dealing with profiles.

I added a cool one for the HM Baryta set. See this download:

It's a set of the HMBaryta curves for p800 that I relinearized for my printer.
Just drop them into the p800-UC folder and re-install.

You can probably use this cool curve for other papers as well. If you are only using a
little in the blend it's unlikely to vary the density much.

(sorry I don't have MK ink loaded and I'm printing a lot of PK)

Re: [QuadtoneRIP] Newbie With Some Questions: PK cool

2018-12-19 by dgoldsm@...

Have you ever received an explanation for the lack of a pk "cool" curve for the p800: or even an explanation for the lack of an explanation? Has anybody? Mr Harrington posted a note with a reference to a usable curve, it was in a DropBox folder. By the time I got to it, however, the URL was no longer active. Perhaps there is someone in this group who actually got the curve zip file and who would be willing to share it. Surely there is a significant number of P800 users who would be grateful for even an imperfect but usable copy. How cool would that be?
