Epson 4880 new behaviour

Epson 4880 new behaviour

2018-12-11 by goch@...

For those of you using an Epson 4880:

I have used a 4880 for many years. I have used Epson and MIS inks in various combinations.

Three times in the past I have installed "cleaning cartridges" and cleaned the heads. The cartridges were/are from China, and had resettable chips. I did not have any problems doing this, and leaving the printer overnight with the cartridges still installed (after doing a couple cleaning cycles), always produced perfect print-head checks.

Today I needed to use the cartridges again, since there was clogging that regular cleaning did not touch. This time, though, the printer would not accept the cartridges. It would recognize them, inform me that they were not genuine, and ask if I wanted to risk it. That is perfectly normal. But after I accepted the risk in proceeding it would tell me to load cartridges. The printer menu screen showed empty boxes for all of the cartridges, as though nothing were there.

After a while I gave up and reinstalled the ink cartridges. I have been using MIS Eboni, LB and LLB for at least two years, with Epson colours. The 4880 recognized them as not genuine etc. But after accepting the risk, the printer told me to load cartridges. This has *never* happened before with these cartridges.

Any idea what has happened?

I may be using a newish print driver on one of my computers, but I know for certain that I have *never* upgraded any firmware.

Myron, that sounded like a new firmware but from your last comment, i guess not. have you tried to revert to an older print driver ?

For what it is worth, I print over a wifi network. The printer problems occur without any involvement of the network - - - that is, they depend only on how the printer itself, in isolation, is functioning.

It *does* sound like someone updated the firmware, but I read about the dangers of doing this a couple years ago and so purposely avoid it. I don't recall upgrading firmware on *any* Epson I've ever owned, although I think there have been upgrades available for networking.

Because I get stuck at the "REPLACE INK CRTG" message, I can't even check which version of the firmware I have (assuming it is somewhere in the menus).

Well I only have a 2200 but if the 4880 has a screen, maybe there is an about option somewhere. I would Google it. That is a real bummer. I have a cis and I love it.

THE SOLUTION appears to involve resetting the chips... at least sometimes.

I could get the printer up and running with Epson colour cartridges combined with MIS blacks (my usual setup), by resetting the chips for the MIS cartridges. But I have not yet been able to get it to work with the cleaning cartridges (with freshly-reset chips).

I have a feeling that I am confused about something or I changed something and forgot what I had done. I have no idea what it is, though. I'll just let it go for a few days and it will probably be obvious. Sigh.
