InkOwl inks

2018-12-16 by goch@...

Is anyone familiar with InkOwl pigment inks? www.inkowl.com

I have a friend who is considering the Canon Pro-1000 printer, purely for colour printing. Ink cost is a concern, so refilling from bulk is desirable. InkOwl offers American-made pigment inks that apparently can be used to refill the original cartridges. (It's not clear to me how the chips are supposed to be handled.)

I only use Epson printers, so I'm not sure how to advise her.

Thanks!
Myron

Myron,

Jose Rodriguez on youtube has tons of videos on the Pro 1000 and especially refilling carts. He tends to prefer Precision Color Signature Edition inks along with some OEM inks, but he speaks well of Ink Owl.

Thanks!
Precision Color looks more promising, in only because they are willing to admit the near impossibility of exactly matching the Pro 1000’s red and blue inks.

Re: [QuadtoneRIP] InkOwl inks

Hello Myron,

Mike preceded my post here with a recommendation for Precision Color inks and carts for the Canon Pro 1000 printer (and Canon Pro 100).
Jose Rodriguez's videos are very educational, so much so I support him on Patreon with a small donation every month.

I own both Epson and Canon printers and I think Canon printers in the desktop sizes are better made than the Epson machines. However there are some serious draw backs to be aware of.

After the over flow cart becomes full the printer is dead.

And of course the Canon's of this ilk use dye inks which are more fugitive than the Epson pigmented inks.

QTR does not support non Epson printers.

The dye inks DO NOT work effectively for making digital negatives for UV printing processes.

BUT, for the price of the printers after the rebates are thrown in they are a great bargain when you couple their use with Precision Color inks. Precision also builds color profiles for several papers, and those profiles seem to be very very good.

The B&W prints made with the color dyes can be very neutral - these printers make good general purpose proofing machines.

My 2 cents ~ Regards,

Don Bryant

Don,

The Canon Pro 1000 that the discussed inks are for uses pigment inks. It has a replaceable maintenance cart (ink overflow). The only major consideration is that it is very difficult to move after it has been given its initial ink charge. There are internal reservoirs that are emptied at great loss of ink if the charged printer is taken off of level.

Re: [QuadtoneRIP] InkOwl inks

2018-12-19 by Myron Gochnauer

One of the online video does a nice job of explaining the Canon Pro 1000’s ink supply system:

In the Epson 3880, ink goes from the cartridge through supply lines to the head assembly.

In the Canon, it goes from the cartridges through supply lines to an intermediate reserve or buffer tank, and then to the head assembly. Replacing the ink thus requires cleaning out the lines *and* the reserve tank. What’s the point of the reserve tank? If you are doing a large print job when the cartridge hits ‘empty’, you can continue without any danger of an interruption. The down side is that you have a great deal of ink ‘hidden’ inside the printer, so draining loses a lot of ink. (In the Epson you only lose the ink in the lines and head assembly.)

Or that’s the way I understood what was said.
