Location of .quad files on Win 7 PC

Location of .quad files on Win 7 PC

2017-01-17 by jthacker@...

When I use the creation tool, it creates a .quad file which I can then use to print with. I can save the underlying .qjidf file at any location of my choosing but where is the .quad file located?

Check this:
C:\Users\[user name]\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\QuadToneRIP\QuadTone .

I make a shortcut on the Desktop to get to these VirtualStore file locations.

Wonder if someone could provide a short tutorial on adapting and installing a .txt profile created for the MAC on a Windows machine? Or direct me to any existing tutorial that explains this?

Don’t know if this is what you’re looking for Sandy, it assumes moving the .txt file from an iMac to a virtual machine running windows 7, on the iMac.

From my iMac, I select the .txt file and duplicate and move to desktop. Change the .txt to .qidf. I then drag the .qidf file to the desktop of windows 7 running on vmware fusion. Now you can open QTR on your windows machine, and open the file in curve creator tool and open the .qidf on the desktop and start editing.

Sandy
Qtr on the windows machine has "curve creator" GUI. It can be found under the options tab in the main GUI. In the curves creator go to file and open the txt file. If you save this file the creator will generate the appropriate .quad file and save it in the appropriate location.

Why wouldn’t you just take the Mac quad file?

John,

I assumed this was the way it should work. However, one of my former students reported that he was not able to install the Carbon-100 .txt file through the curve creator in the QTRGui. What he told me was this.

My friend is on a MAC computer and was able to load your Carbon 100 curve without any problem but I could never get it correct on my Windows PC. I kept getting a weird result for the Carbon 100 curve.

What we just discovered 2 items that cause my weird result.

On the text document that describes the curve, it does not show that Black Boost should be set to 100 in Curve Creator

Also, we did not realize that for Black Ink K – it should show 'Load Curve' and then “Curve”

Without these settings the resulting curve is not correct.

The Carbon 100 profile is quite simple and I always assumed it would install fine in Windows if one just loaded it in the QTRGui and ran the curve creator file. Could it be that he was not changing the extension from .txt to .qidf before opening the file? Or is that even necessary?

The .txt file in question is copied below.

Hi Sandy, I am running window 7 pro and the QTRGui is version 2.7.0.0, the curve creator is version 2.7.5. I opened the text file and had not issues.I have seen discussions that indicate there are issues with the curve creator in the QTRgui on later versions of windows OS, but I haven't tracked that discussion.
The other alternative is to copy the MAC .quad file to the PC, but that doesn't help if you want to edit the underlying text file.
From the discussion with you client, it sounds as though he figured it out. Is that correct?
 Cheers, John

I had errors at first when I tried to open the file (first saved with *.qidf extension). They related to the LK and LLK. When I made sure the Curve Creator (Win 7, v. 2.7.0.0) printer type was set to 7800, it opened.

When I went to save it (via the "Show Curve" button), the first error I got was due to the name having a space in it. An underscore solved that problem.

The next error I got was that the linearization data was not constantly increasing. In Windows, we have to start with the paper white end of the assumed print (not negative). I did not reverse the order of the data and try that.

Paul,I opened the txt file using the Quad7800 printer. Ink limits ok, K curve is ok, linearization is ok. Definitely don't understand the differences.

John,

Yes, the student worked it out on his own, with the help of a friend who uses MAC. But he reported that he had to make two changes, neither of which should have been necessary as far as I understand QTR.

"What we just discovered 2 items that cause my weird result.

On the text document that describes the curve, it does not show that Black Boost should be set to 100 in Curve Creator

Also, we did not realize that for Black Ink K – it should show 'Load Curve' and then “Curve”"

Could this be caused by different Install programs in MAC and Windows?

Sandy

I don't know about the differences in the install programs, but I suspect it may be something different. Perhaps the difference in the text editors or the difference in the update version of Win 7. I can do an experiment wrt Win 7. Curve creator is not kept up to day with the changes in the window OS, so maybe there is something going on there. On my laptop's version of Win 7, I keep the windows update turned off. This is the machine use for printing negatives. I can try to open the txt on my desktop, which I keep the windows update turned on automatic. I'll try the experiment when I get home later today.
This is a real puzzle.
Cheers,
John

Sirs
Since I think I am the student Sandy is referring to, here is my 2 cents. I am not an expert on QTR. I have read the Ron Reeder info, Clay Harmon's info and other text.
I have a Windows 7 PC. My friend Doug is on a Mac.
When Doug and I returned from Sandy's excellent Carbon workshop, I had numerous problems getting Sandy's Carbon 100 curve to display correctly on my Windows PC. I kept getting something like shown in the attachment that I will call "Wrong Curve For Carbon".
Doug was able to get Sandy's Carbon 100 curve to show properly on his MAC without any difficulty. This curve is shown in the attachment called "Ink load for Sandy King Carbon 100 Curve".
After many failures, Doug and I realized that for some reason when I was entering the curve data in QTR Curve Creator, I needed to Show Black Boost to be 100 and in Black (K) line I needed to show Load Curve - Curve. Once I made these changes I got the correct Curve developed by Sandy. Yeah!!!
I am not sure if this helps you to understand the curve generation issue that I had. I hope so and I hope I have not caused any confusion on this matter.

Re: [QuadtoneRIP] Location of .quad files on Win 7 PC

Bruce,
Thanks for the message. I have run several tests: one with a Carbon100 txt file which Sandy sent me and was made using the text editor on the MAC; one where I opened the txt file on two different WIN 7 platforms (one is WIN 7 which has never been updated and one which has been updated via windows update). In both tests, the txt files opened without a problem and created the expected .quad file. So, without specifically having the txt file you were working with and knowing the version of the QTRgui, it is hard to say why you have seen those issues.
But good to hear that you have resolved the problem.
Cheers,
John

John,

Thanks for testing the profile for me.

I suspect that there may have been some format or encoding issue introduced by downloading or transfer of the original .txt file from one device to another.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
