Getting dMin down

Getting dMin down

2005-11-11 by Tom Husband

I'm creating some cool and warm curves for Moab Kayenta and a 2200
with UT7 ink. I'm happy with the dMax of 1.600 but dMin is running
0.130. Ideally shouldn't it be 0.000? How would I get it there? If
I were to increase the value of the Gray Curve Highlight would it
bring the dMin down? Right now I have the highlight at 4.

Thanks,

Tom

Dmin is established by the density of paper white. Unless you have some
white ink installed in your printer, that's as low as you can go. Of course
you could use a brighter paper.

Seriously, though your dmin value does seem unusually high. Looking at the
various curves in the distribution, most dmin values are in the range .02 to
.08. For example looking at the 4000 curve for Moab Entrada Natural the
first linearization step (effectively the dmin or density of paper white) is
.03 and the 10% gray step, at .015, is just slightly darker than your dmin.

It could be that Kayenta is darker than most other papers, your density
measurements are off, or your curve is putting ink down at 0% gray.

Re: Getting dMin down

I think it must be my X-rite 810. EAM when measured comes in at .13.
I'll recalibrate this weekend but I just did it a month ago so I'm
surprised it's so far off. Either I'm not calibrating correctly or
something is wrong with the unit.

Thanks,

Tom

i just took a measurement of blank sheet of moab kayenta with an EyeOne
and QuickRead and in my case it shows 0.04.
