Need help with terminology re: QTR profiles

Need help with terminology re: QTR profiles

2017-08-31 by david@...

I have been using my own terminology for these two approaches and if I should instead be using preexisting terms, I hope someone will correct me.

For the traditional QTR, multiple gray dilution approach where each successively greater dilution of black ink is set to replace the previous dilution at the same gray density as the darkest of the new dilution, I refer to this as using the inks "in series".

When inks are set up to just copy the curve of MK, I call this "in parallel".

So, let me have it. Where have I gone wrong? (Wait, I have an ex-wife for that.) Just tell me if there are already existing terms and what they are?

I think you are pretty close to the mark there. Besides, I am not sure there is a widely used set of terms for these things.

I call the QTR curves made with overlapping inks from light to dark as having a "partitioned grayscale". I think I remember Paul Roark calling them "serially partitioned".

I personally call the curves using the copy curve setting "a bad idea" (JK!!!) I call them "single channel curves using n inks" because you are relying on either the single partition from the gray_val_1=100 to generate the MK channel quad values (unless you are using the Curve_K="0:0 ... 100:100" setting)

I think might also be a good idea to make the distinction between QTR-partitioned curves, smoothed QTR-partitioned curves, Piezography partitioned curves, and my system that uses my custom partitioning formulas that bypass the QTR curve-creation program altogether (I don't have a name for that yet....)

not sure that helps?

Thanks Richard. Very helpful, indeed.
