Going Crazy! Issue with print sizes on 7900

2018-05-07 by africanstephensons@...

Hi All.

I am running a 7900 with Piezography inks on a Mac, so using Print-Tool and qtr.

After getting everything set up, I've run into a problem where my print size is constrained by the "Paper Handling" tab in the print driver.

I set my paper size using the "Manage Custom Sizes..." dialogue, and send to the printer (for example, 600mm wide). However when it gets to the printer it is only printing about 210mm of the image width, and cropping the rest of it.

I eventually discovered this is being governed by the "Paper Handling" tab. There is a drop-down option for "Destination Paper Size:", and two check-boxes for "Scale to fit paper size", and "Scale down only".

When the boxes are unchecked, "Destination Paper Size:" is greyed-out, and defaults to "Suggested Paper: US Letter". This setting takes effect whether the check-boxes are selected or not, and limits my image size to US letter dimensions.

When I check the boxes and select a different paper size, that governs what size I am able to print to. There is no choice to make a custom size in that dialog, so in order to print as wide as possible, I have to choose "24x36". This results in my image (if smaller height than 36") being centred in the middle of the 36", and wastes a lot of paper. It also means I can't print larger than 24x36.

I'm not sure if it makes a difference or not, but this is using roll paper, not sheet. Roll paper is confirmed in both the physical printer panel and the QTR setting.

I have tried resetting the default paper size in the "Printers & Scanners" tab of system preferences, but no difference. I have tried reinstalling QTR (using Install7900-ProK4.command), but no difference.

Any ideas what is causing the "Paper Handling" tab to hijack my custom print sizes? I've never come across this sizing issue with other printers (colour 7900, 9800, Canon iPF8100) where the "Paper Handling" tab has any effect. I've always ignored it in the past.

Please help! I'm tearing my hair out!

There are two main potential issues -- hard to tell which is affecting you.

First, a very common mistake with roll paper custom paper sizes is either mixing
up width and height, or sizes too large or small.

Width is always the width of the printer 24in or 600mm (610 is too wide).
Height/Length is always along to feed direction. So for example -- 16x24 is
really 24 width x 16 height, also a large landscape like 1200x600 is always
600mm width x 1200mm high. The minimum length is 5inches or 127mm.
The case where you got a 210mm print is likely a too big/small paper size.

Deleting old paper size and creating a new one should fix this.

But if you still get the Paper Handling issue the second possible issue is the
Printer Presets. These are internal to OSX so a bit harder to "see". You may have
one of those checkboxes or something internal set incorrectly and its stuck that way.
Recreating a Preset starting from "Default Settings" usually fixes this. Make sure
you always Save presets that you will use again after any changes.

For a really stubborn version of this you can Reset the printer system which will
clear all the printer info (so you9;ll have to re-create all the printers you need).
This is done in SysPrefs > Printers. Right-click on list of printers and do
the "Reset Print System..."

In general I don't think you should ever need the Paper Handling -- checkboxes.

Thank you Roy.

Yes, my problem was that I had set my custom print size to 610mm wide, which I thought was the metric equivalent of 24". Turns out it will print fine when set to 609mm, but not 610mm.

Basically (it seems to me) that the driver then thinks that since the image is larger than the paper size, it should tile my image across multiple sheets of paper, and uses the set (greyed out) paper size in the "Paper Handling" tab as the size sheets it will tile the image across—in my case, US Letter.

As soon as I set my custom image size to 609mm wide, it prints fine :-)

Thanks again Roy!
