Setting up for Epson P800 printer

Setting up for Epson P800 printer

2018-08-23 by Peter Marquis-Kyle

I'm looking for guidance about setting up Quad Tone RIP to drive my new
Epson SureColor P800 printer. I intend to use the standard Epson ink.

I have QTRgui 2.7.0.0 and QTR 2.7.2 installed on my Windows 7 64bit
computer, set up to work with my previous Epson R2400 printer.

I have downloaded the QTR_Setup_2.7.8.EXE file -- can I simply run that
setup file, or should I remove the old QTR installation first?

Are there any hazards I should be aware of?

(And I'd like to take this moment to thank Roy Harrington for his work
on QTR -- I've been a happy user since the days of the Epson 1160).

I have had no problem using QuadTone RIP with my Windows 8.1 software on a PC printing on my Epson P600. Only issue I have is loading the correction curve into QTRgui. Would guess that you could run the new version without deleting the old, but what's the point of keeping the obsolete? Hope this helps. And any help with loading curves would be appreciated.

I have a related question. I also have QTR installed on my PC. I have added a number of files to the QTR folders. Will they be deleted if I re-run the setup program?

I use QTR on Windows 7 without any problems. You can just rerun the install and my recollection is that it will simply overwrite any older files. No need to uninstall and reinstall.

In relation to John's question, I don't think that it will overwrite or wipe any files that you've added, provided that they don't have the same name as any files in the install (i.e. you haven't edited any installed files and kept the same file name), but I always make sure I have a backup of those files somewhere just in case.

QTR has two locations for its files - under Program Files tree and under Users. You'll only see notice this if you go looking for your files, as QTRGui will combine the two sources seamlessly. The idea is that any files you create would normally be stored under Users. My understanding is that this is done for security and permissions reasons, but it also means that your files are separate from the installed files. If you like me find that tedious, and have placed your own curves under Program Files, then I'd take a backup before installing as a precaution, but as long as you have used unique file names then I don't think you should have a problem.

Brian says "The idea is that any files you create would normally be stored under Users." That's exactly how it should be. Every normal Windows application works that way. But when I installed QTR, I was surprised that there was no such separation of system and user data -- at least it was not documented. As a result, I have been putting my user files in C:\Program Files (x86)\QuadToneRIP. I grumble every time I do it because it requires me to enter my administrator password.

Now that I look, I see a directory D:\Users\John\AppData\Roaming\QuadToneRIP. It contains three files: QTRGui.ini, QTRGui.ini.bad, and QTRLog.txt, but no subdirectories. Are you saying that if I replicate the directory structure of QuadToneRip I can put my user files there? For example, can store user Quad files in
D:\Users\John\AppData\Roaming\QuadToneRIP\QuadTone\?

I should have said "I grumble every time I do it because it requires me to enter my administrator password AND because it makes me worry what will happen if I re-run the QTR installer.";

For the record, I tried simply running the 2.7.8 setup file but got some
error messages.

I uninstalled the previous installation, then ran the new setup file
without any glitches. I made a test print without any problems. All good.

Short answer: almost but not quite.

Slightly longer answer: You want to create:
C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\QuadToneRIP\QuadTone

so you want the Local folder tree and not the Roaming folder tree. Note also the "VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)" part of the path name. Not sure about the D: drive, but I assume you've located your user folders there?

This is really valuable information. I would have known it if I used the QTR curve creation tools. However I use the piezography system, which has its own curve creation tools. Those tools, at least on Windows, create .quad files but don't install them in any particular location.

I will move my user files into the VirtualStore directory and see what happens.

I keep my system on C:\ and my user data on D:\.

Thanks for your help!

Re: [QuadtoneRIP] Re: Setting up for Epson P800 printer

Today I ran a test to see if QTRGui would pick up quad files I placed in the 'local' QuadTone directory.

First, I created a directory for my Printer:

D:\Users\John\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\QuadToneRIP\QuadTone\QuadR2000-PiezoDN-P2

I added a quad file named 'foobar.quad'. But when I ran QTRGui, I did not see 'foobar.quad' listed in the Curve menus.

Am I doing something wrong?
Thanks

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
