Horizontal banding in areas of solid black

Horizontal banding in areas of solid black

2005-12-30 by Howard Shaw

I'm printing a number of images on a 2200 with largeish areas of solid
black and, to varying degrees, those areas are showing very narrow
horizontal bands which appear like small scratches. At first I thought
it was something wrong with the paper but I've now tried three different
papers all with the same results.

I've posted a scan of one of the worst affected (it's about a 1 inch
wide strip in the original):
http://www.glassman.mistral.co.uk/qtr/qtr_banding.jpg

I'm using 1440 super and have tried Eventone & Ordered dithers - the
results are slightly different but just as unuseable. I've also tried
different ink limits and various profiles but all with the same results.
I'm using Eboni Black & UT-FS & FSN inks.

Looking back through the archives there was reference to a similar
problem here:

Any advice much appreciated.

There has been quite a lot of discussion of banding. You might look at some
additional messages. The link below may contain a relevant suggestion:

Thanks Tom

I've switched to 2880dpi profiles & that seems to have fixed it.

Re: Horizontal banding in areas of solid black

I've had a very subtle banding issue in very soft, grainless, very
smooth midtones (out of focus middle grey shadowed skintones shot on
120) with alpha-cellulose papers, which seem slow to absorb dye...they
look better in 24 hours.

The best (total) fix seems "Hybrid Floyd Steinberg" dither.

Hi Howard,
what do you intend about switching to 2880dpi profiles? which one did you
use for the 2200?
I have the same problem as you, I tried to print at 2880, the problem disappears
but the prints have a really darker tones, while at 1440 super (without super the banding
increased) it was identical to my monitor.
Thanks.

Andrea

I made my own profiles. The ink limits are much lower than the profiles
done for 1440dpi. For example, a UT-FS set up I have has limits of 55%
for K & 40% for the lighter inks.

If you are unable to make your own profiles I've heard it suggested that
having a large negative value for the Ink Limit Adjustment (say -40)
reduces the amount of ink being laid down. I guess you could also use
the gamma adjustment to do the same thing in the higher zones.

Re: [QuadtoneRIP] Re: Horizontal banding in areas of solid black

Incidentally, I should add that when I was having this problem with
1440dpi prints it was not a problem with just with qtr. I tried black
only printing with the Epson driver and that also showed terrible
banding even though I could make very nice BO prints when the printer
was new.

My nozzle checks are fine and the head alignment is as good as I can get
it with the tests you can run so I really don't know what the problem is.

I use refillable cartridges from MIS and I have ordered some
replacements in case these are getting a little 'tired'.

regards
Howard

Thank you for the answers. Seems like we have different problems with the same
banding. I use MIS Eboni for matte black and UC epson for the other cartidges, with the
UC profile by quadtone rip installed for my epson 2100 (european version of the 2200).
And I just reanimate my printer, cause for an year the black nozzles have been clogged.
But now I print perfectly with BO printing and MIS Eboni at 2880 dpi (like I did before the
clog), without banding at all. I just have the problem with UC profiles by quadtone rip
at 1440 dpi. I don't know hot to made my own profiles. And I prefer the b&w from
quadtone rip, more neutral and smooth, so I'd like to figure out the problem.
Thanks!
Andrea
