2200 Curves For Gossy Paper

2200 Curves For Gossy Paper

2006-01-09 by Tom Husband

I have a 2200 cartridge of PKN coming that I'll use along with UT7
inks. I want to try some semi gloss paper and eventually the new
Crane Museo Silver Rag. I don't find any existing 2200 curves for
glossy paper which I can base my new curves on. I've read that for
glossy paper all the inks should be used except LK and Y. Does that
make sense? Are there curves, perhaps from another printer, that I
could use to base my own on?

Thanks,

Tom

Tom

Check out Daniel Staver's curves in the files section - UT7 with PKN for the
2200 and Ilford SP.

Perfect. Thanks Tom. I should have looked there first.

Let me know how those curves work out for you. I never got around to
linearizing them, but really liked the prints I got.

The curves are designed for the old base UT7 inks. I have UT7 inks here with
the new base but haven't used up the old cartridges yet, when I do I plan to
update the curves.

Will do Daniel. I'll use yours as a base and make
some new ones.

Your curves only use K and LM. Why is that? Not that
I'm any expert here but I'm trying to understand the
relationship between the inks. I read (I think in the
B&W Group) that all the C and M channel inks could be
used for glossy paper. Do you think that's worth a
try?

Thanks,

Tom

I did it because of problems with high ink load on the glossy papers when
making the GLOP curves. Since I add 60% GLOP over the entire image that adds
a significant amount of ink, creating visible mottling unless you're very
careful with the other inks. The prints I got with these curves looked
really great though, I could hardly see the dither pattern even with only
two inks. It seems the dither is much finer, with more detail on glossy
papers than matte papers.

The curves without GLOP are just the same curves with the Y channel removed.

With the new base it should be possible to use higher ink loads and less
GLOP.
