OS X 10.4.6 Installation Problems

OS X 10.4.6 Installation Problems

2006-05-17 by robert49brake

Hello All, I wanted to explore Quadtone RIP's possibilities on an Epson R220 with MIS
inksets but am having problems with the installation on a G4 Powerbook running OS X
10.4.6.

I downloaded and opened the package which immediately went to the Installer Program
and was installed as normally done with OS X and was "successful" according to the
Installer. I could not find the "app" in any folders on my desktop, in my Applications
folder nor in my Utilities folder. I could not find "QuadTone RIP" or any varient in any
application location using Search.

I re-read the QuadTone manuals and then tried to run the Install Script with the R200,
R320 etc. (R220 is not listed) without success. I then started my printer and went looking
for any signs of Quadtone there. I then went through a number of varients including un-
installing and re-installing with the same results. I then went toggling anything I could
find in order to locate some sign of the program. I did eventually succeed in getting the
QuadTone version of the R220 to show up in the printer dialogue but in a test print could
not get any "curves" or "profiles" to toggle up. I then un-installed again and re-installed
to see if I missed something in the installation steps. Same situation but this time I could
not duplicate whatever I did to get the Quadtone version of the R220 to show up. I'm
using the trial version only so have no loss involved but the program does look very
interesting with a lot of options for hextone printers.

Following is the Diagnostic Script. I can see the R220 showing up but, sorry, I have no
proficiency in reading Scripts (looks like something I'll need to learn with a Mac though)
Any help would be appreciated.

Re: [QuadtoneRIP] OS X 10.4.6 Installation Problems

2006-05-18 by Roy Harrington

Hi Robert,

The R220 driver name isn't available yet. But its completely
compatible with the R200
so all you need to do is set it up as if it were are a R200. The
auto-installation won't work
but the installation is pretty easy to workaround. The idea is to use
the name QuadR200
and connect it to your R220. So in Print Utility, click Add, select
the R220 printer, set
the name to QuadR200 and select in Print Using: QuadTone 2.4 R200.
Now you will be able to use the InstallR200 script.

The more involved issue is that I'm not sure which set of inks you
actually have and in
any case there aren't any pre-made profiles for MIS inks on the R200.
Are you using EZBW
inks? With these its also possible to just print with the Epson driver.

Thanks for the response, Roy. I think a great deal of the "problem" is a "warning" that
comes up telling me the Install Script can't find the Printer QuadR200 when in fact it has
and I've been able to print through the QuadR200 dialogue box since following your post.
I didn't understand that the printer is installed with a given inkset. I believe I have it
installed with the R200GQ and it printed so I can see an eventual resolution to that
problem. I re-read your info on "Installing custom QTR Profiles for (sp?-from?) another
source" and I see how that can work although I couldn't find just the ink description
section of a profile at MIS in order to create an install script with that ink per your tutorial.

I'm currently using MIS UT-R2 with Paul Roark's profiles with excellant results. I have both
warm and nuetral sets and am building a small library of tonal combinations by manually
swapping cartridges and papers. This was always a "temporary" method for me as I have
been awaiting the release of UT-3D and I may simply be jumping the gun here. The
reason I went to QTR was for the profiling ability for different papers not already published
and the belief that the UT-3D inksets will need some sort of curve for toning the inkset. I
may not fully understand the 3D set yet but that is what seems logical to me at the
moment: a profile for the printer/paper for the density and varying curves for the toning
properties of the inkset. There seem to be other minor issues more with me and
understanding executable Scripts (I'm new to Mac as of my switch to Digital Photography
six months ago.)

The long term goal here is to be able to create my own profiles and curves eventually for
the UT-3D inkset with different papers so that I'm not constantly swapping cartridges as I
do with the UT-R2. Another side interest is the creation of digital negatives by inkjet for
contact printing (I found an accessable darkroom within walking distance of where I have
recently moved to and I can't give up Silver altogether.) The idea of the control curves and
profiles would give sound very useful for making digital negatives.

The R220 I'm using may not be the best choice support wise for this sort of thing but I
have one dedicated for B&W and even with wet prints I never worked larger than 8x10 so I
haven't found any reason to go larger yet.

I appreciate your response. My heavy seasonal workload is about to take off this coming
Monday so most of this will have to be put on the back burner until winter anyway, by then
I expect a great deal of work will have been done on the UT-3D and I'll see where things
go. Thanks again!
