Canon IPF5000 & QTR
2006-08-06 by Tony Bonanno
Hi Group, Well, after years of Epsons, I had my third 4000 bite the dust with a bad printhead in the middle of printing a show and was not happy. Rather than mess with another one, during a moment of anger and frustration, I managed to haul into my studio the new Canon IPF5000 17" pigment printer (I think it is the only one in New Mexico at the moment). Boy, little did I know what I was biting off.. very different user interface and much work needed by Canon to streamline and document the driver/software/16 bit plugin. HOWEVER, once I got into it, I'm finding that this printer may be a real keeper. The 16-bit Photoshop plug-in (which is all but undocumented by Canon) turns out to have real power for B&W. The dot size of the Canon print head is visibly larger than the Epsons' under magnification, but not visible in real world terms. I'm getting some very neutral and nice B&W output, comparable to what is coming off the R2400 K3 inkset. The DMAX and black are looking good. I think there are four different "blacks/greys" on board and no need to switch any inks between matte and photo papers. I suddenly realized this afternoon that I have no way of using QTR with this machine... right ? I'm thinking that with a RIP like QTR, this machine will sing. Whoa, I miss QTR. Hopefully enough folks will get on this machine for Roy to justify writing the code or whatever.. Cheers, Tony Bonanno Santa Fe
