A bit OT---and a repeat of my earlier question.....

2006-09-06 by Diane Fields

I resubbed to this group several days ago--and just checked my
membership again. It IS set for emails, addy is correct---but I
haven't received the first one. I can't thik of a reason they would
bounce--but how would I be aware of that if it was happening? I've had
no problems in receiving email from the group before---and don't think
I've changed anything. Just basic AVG virus software

I am still hoping that someone will answer my question about using QTR
with Qimage and PS--if you basically just print in neutral b/w as the
profile--or if there is any way to 'tone' them? I'm using the QTR gui
with good success and have point others to it over the past 2 years--
but since I do print color in Qimage and PS---I would like to know if
this is an alternative---or---better to stick with the original
interface. I have th ought all along I understood the whole workflow--
but would hate to be missing something.

Well, receiving no answer on either not receiving email nor about
using
QTR with PS/Qimage, I went back to my saved notes over a couple of
years and the latest print out I have leads me to believe that using
QTR with a Mac is different than using it with Win. As I understand
it
from my info about grayscale workspaces and printing profiles, its
necessary to save a tiff file for Win so you save using either the
gray
matte paper or gray photo paper--and then save the file for printing
in
QTRgui. So--I'm assuming that you cannot print from PS in Win (and I
work with the LAB profile for processing and then convert.)

I don't understand printing from Qimage--even after I've read the
last
posts on it. I have to assume that one is better to not use Qimage
due
to constant upgrades of the app--and stick with QTRgui.

I'm still in a quandary as to why I'm not receiving emails from the
QTR
forum after a number of days being subbed.

Hi Diane

My guess is that you haven't received a response to your question because
the question itself is not quite clear. I'm not quite sure what you're
asking, but I'll take a guess and perhaps it will get the ball rolling.

Since you are talking about QTRgui and Qimage, I assume you are using a PC.
You can use PS and Qimage to prepare your image for printing. For example,
you can use qimage to resize and/or assemble multiple images on a page.
However in any case, PS or qimage must be used to create a .tif file that is
then printed with QTRgui. You might want to check out the discussion on the
BW printing with qimage on the BW printing list. There is may be some issues
with the colour management of images in qimage that affect the print
quality.

As for toning images, I'm not sure exactly what you are asking. Are you
asking about adding colour to an otherwise BW image or creating an image
within the range of tones (cool to warm) normally provided by QTR? There is
no reliable way I know of to print a mixed colour and BW image using QTR, if
that is what you're asking. The creation of toned prints (e.g. sepia) is
done by blending curves in QTR. That's sort of fundamental and probably not
what you are asking about, so if I haven't answered your questions you'll
have to elaborate.

I can sense your frustration in the lack of response from the list. In
general, most list members are pretty helpful. If you don't get a response
to a question, it's probably because it's not understood. When that happens,
breaking the question down into separate simpler ones may generate a
response and start a dialogue.

I could swear I replied to your message via the website a day or two ago,
but it seems it never showed up so I'm not sure what happened.

As you discovered from researching your notes, you cannot print using QTR
directly from Photoshop or Qimage if you're running on Windows. Apparently
it's a little different on the Mac since QTR installs as a system print
driver (I guess?) but that's not the case on windows.

You can't directly print from Qimage (for QTR monochrome, at least), but
what you can do is print to file, generating a TIFF that is then printed via
QTRGui. The main reason to do this would be to take care of any image
resizing or cropping you want to do. For instance if I have a 3:2 ratio 6mp
image tagged at 200dpi I can't really print it as an 8x10 direct from
QTRGui. At the very least it needs to be tagged with the correct image size
and cropped to a 4:5 ratio. I may also want to interpolate the image to a
specific PP. Qimage makes doing all this very easy, and it also has some
layout capabilities that are nice (for instance being able to print 2 5x7's
on an letter-sized sheet of paper).

Yes--I see that it is unclear. And--since I couldn't bring up
anything in my search (and obviously have missed some crucial
discussions) I just was totally unclear myself about people wanting
to print from Qimage or PS as opposed to QTRgui, which I've always
used. Now I see that the Mac folks are able to use QTR somewhat
differently. (I have to admit I've never read the Mac directions on
Roy's page).

Toning---I should have been more clear on this--its in reference to
blending the profiles, i.e., cool/warm from 100% to say 20%--that I
meant for toning. I'm not even sure that this statement is clear
LOL. However--at this point, it doesn't matter since I see that
QTRgui is the way I should print using QTR. I have used Qimage for
quite a few years--and sometimes have used it with print to file for
interpolation for a large (36 x 24)file to be printed by a graphics
lab. I took it back to PS for conversion to the proper CMYK
profile. Never thought of doing this for QTR however--that is a good
tip--thanks.

I believe I also questioned whether those printing with the Epson
2400 found QTR to still be better overall for mono prints as opposed
to using the Epson driver for mono prints (even toned). I've
received some good answers on other forums---which more or less lead
me to consider that sticking with my 2200 and QTR may be the way to
go for at least awhile.

I'm still not receiving emails and don't quite know what else to do.
I've never had problems in being able to sub to this or any other
group. I tried the normal way of editing my membership---and by
using the method of 'subbing' with the address shown below in the
home page of QTR group. If anyone else can give me any hints as to
how to be able to get daily emails to this group, I would appreciate
it.

Thanks for the replies---they helped me understand that the way I've
been printing from QTR is really the only with using Win.

Diane

If you're not receiving email, I presume you're reading the list using your
web browser. When you are at the QuadtoneRIP Yahoo group main page, go to
Edit Membership page. There you should verify that you have selected one of
the optios to receive email. It will also show the email address you have
elected to use for receiving mail from the group. Make sure that is the one
you expect.

If those settings are already as you would want them, try changing them
(e.g. select digest or individual email, whichever would result in a change)
and saving the new settings and see that has an effect. You can change it
back later once you get it working.

I have found that sometimes yahoo has lost track of my settings and changing
them causes it to get back on track.

Tom, I hate to admit a really big 'DUH on this one. This morning I saw that
I had received 5 messages last time I opened my mail but they weren't in my
'in' box. I glanced down and realized that I had set up a QTR mail box
previously and had set it to have all QTR messages sorted to that box.
Now---for someone that's been around the web for many years---I feel really
dumb LOL. I'm now receiving QTR emails--right where I specfied to receive
them last time I was subbed (last May).

Thanks for the help---one hates to admit such a dumb thing--but at least I
FINALLY realized it---just way too many mail boxes--and lack of attention.
