Top-off refillable carts for 2400

Top-off refillable carts for 2400

2006-10-17 by Carl Schofield

Has anyone tried these cartridges in the Epson 2400 printer? If they
work as advertised then should solve a lot of messy refill problems
and avoids tubes, etc. associated with CFS systems.

Those sponge-free empty carts for the R2400 from UINK cost $264 for a set.

MIS sell R2400 sponge-free carts for about $67 a set.

What's the difference (and I don't mean $197)?

Terry.

Difference is that the UINK carts have an auto-reset chip and do not
need to be removed from the printer for refilling and chip
resetting. They have a set of these priced at about the same level
as a CFS. You could probably make your own from MIS supplies by
getting their spongeless carts and adding auto-reset chips. Chips
are $15 each so you save some but will still be expensive option.

Tom,

I couldn't find the UINK type carts at the link you provided and I
don't think that MIS has ever offered an auto-reset, refillable cart
for the 2400. Your link sends me to a general marketing type
website. MIS have only recently provided the spongeless carts, but
they still require chip resetting and removal for refilling (PITA).

Thanks,
Carl

How do people keep track of cartridge ink levels in cartridges with
auto-reset chips?

Visually. The carts are transparent or translucent.

I understand that they are transluscent.
But I can't see how you can judge the level from looking at the top of the cartridge -- i.e. the point is that you don't remove them from the printer, right?

As I mentioned to Carl, there is a site that has refillable 2400 carts
with autoreset chips built in the same as uinik and medistreet. He has
the whole set for about 30 dollars. Excellent serivce. He has a ebay
store.

I have bought from his several times and service is excellent.
He has a complete cis for the r220 for about $30. not sure about the
2400.

Exactly, you don't remove them. I've never seen these carts, but I
would assume you can see down through the refill port enough to
determine if they need to be topped off. If not then they are really
useless.

Thanks Tom. I couldn't find this link in your previous post.
Certainly a lot more reasonable price. He doesn't mention the
autoreset chips in the ebay description, so I sent him an inquiry.

Why not?

You can't judge the ink levels by looking down in the cart. I try to catch them before they run dry. Hasn't seemed to hurt my printer any. They are not without problems. Mine seem to lose their prime every time I refill them. One pain in the ass.

"Why not?"

You mean - why not remove the cartridges to check the ink level?

The whole point of using auto-reset chips was to avoid removing the
cartridges from the printer. Otherwise, you may as well use regular (and
cheaper) cartridge chips and a resetter. That way you'd have an idea of how
much in was left before removing the cartridges.

What you say is correct. They were originally for use in a CIS. They are now used in refillable carts mainly because they don't infringe on any Epson patents. Frankly I prefer to use regular chips and reset them for the very reason you gave.
