New R2400 - posterization, no midtones

New R2400 - posterization, no midtones

2006-10-29 by benmarks2003

Hey all-I am trying to get K7 inks up and running with QTR on a Windows
machine. Nozzle tests show clear, test subjects are 8-bit grayscale
tiffs with good tonal range. I am trying for a good proof on Epson HW
Matte and have so far had terrible posterization in tghe mid-tones.

Any hints?

Also does anyone know why, when I place a 4x6 image on the bottom half
of a page in QTR it insists on printing upside-down on the "top" half
of the page? A 4x6 image printed on the "top" half of an 8.5x11 page
prints correctly.

It's all a mystery.

Posterization with the K7 inks is almost always due to one or more
carts not
working properly. It's pretty easy of overlook a totally missing
nozzle check
so I'd check that again. With new carts that show no ink output its
usually
because the vent hole is clogged. When you pull the tab sometimes it
does not come completely off.

Sounds like you just have to turn it around -- upside down on top is
the same
as rightside up on the bottom.

I confirm Roy's suggestion. I tried these inks and Quadtone RIP last
week with the posterization result. One of the cartridges had a blocked
vent.

You can push the cartridges apart and peel off the part of plastic still
covering the vent.

Might help. My cartridges were slightly different than described, but
easier to take apart rather than more difficult.

I tested on the R800. I'm still undecided as to whether or not this is
how I will print b/w, but ...

- When you say "good tonal range" do you mean as the image appears on
the screen or in the histogram? The linearized print models and
curves for the piezography products - both current K6 and K7 and
earlier inksets/profiles are very sensitive to "choppy" histograms as
well as clogged nozzles - curves and levels need to be used very
carefully- rather than use an adjustment layer - I will often use
curves on a copy of the original image ( or one channel) - paste it
back in as it's own layer and adjust the opacity to blend - This may
be done several times to increase tonal range while maintaining a
reasonably smooth histogram - and avoiding posterization in printing. -
