Simplified linearization FAQ? or Tutorial?

Simplified linearization FAQ? or Tutorial?

2006-12-30 by Bruce Brown

Greetings from a new member here. Quickly, I'm a fine art
photographer printing B&W images using an Epson 4000 with K7 inks (new
to these, I've been using the Piezography Quads until now). I bought
QTR after learning that my StudioPrint RIP wouldn't work with K7s and
the upgrade was $300 (AND I'm moving to the Epson 9800 which
StudioPrint requires an even bigger $ to upgrade to handle the 44"
width of the new machine). So, I was pleased to find the $50 QTR that
accommodates K7 inks AND the Epson 9800 printer. BUT, QTR's
linearization process is a nightmare to wade through. Hasn't anybody
come up with a simpler-explanation FAQ or Tutorial that makes it easy
for us "Artsy" types (that was one thing I really liked about
StudioPrint -easy wizards to take you the procedure).

So, I've checked out several messages here related to linearization
and unfortunately for me the solutions still seem too cumbersome to
understand.

What a wonderful benefit it would be to people like me (and judging by
the posts on this group's message board there are many people in this
boat) if someone were to develop such a tutorial or FAQ that easily
takes someone with limited experience/knowledge through the
linearization procedure effectively and easily.

I'm open to any guidance/suggestions anyone has to offer...

Thank you for your responses,
Bruce

I'll agree with you, Bruce. I can make some simple curves using a
densitometer and K3 ink for the 2400 printer but when it comes to "split
tone" curves I get lost. I don't understand how to create or load a curve
for the ink positions, i.e., Photo Rag Warmtone curve. The toner curves (
TC-Cool1.raw) I see have me guessing too. I really like the QTR Create ICC
feature and have been using it with Epson ABW. Now I wish to create some
curves in QTR from scratch without fiddling with an existing curve until it
looks OK but not really understanding what I just did.

Both the help in QTR and the excellent User Guide by Tom Moore are very
helpful but are pretty basic in scope. There's so much more to understand
and picking up bits and pieces from this list is kind of frustrating.
Perhaps there is some basic information outside of QTR that I need to
understand (like color theory or some such subject) in order to fully use
QTR.

No 9800 yet, I spoke with the Cone people and they said the cartridges
are in the works. I'll wait till the cartridges are ready and buy the
printer then (I'm using the Epson 4000 until then).

I'm trying to linearize my 4000 with K7 inks.

Thanks for the feedback,
Bruce

Re: [QuadtoneRIP] Simplified linearization FAQ? or Tutorial?

Hi Bruce,

I saw your post on the QuadtoneRIP re linearization and a tutorial.

I have been using the Piezo Quadtone inks for a while and at some
point in the near future will be changing over the the K6 ink set for
my Epson 7500.

I have taken a look at the linearization process using an EyeOne
spectro photometer and am frustrated also.

Now to the good news -- once I can get this process figured out, I
intend to crate a video tutorial on the process. I have a series of
about 10 sets of Photoshop-related video tutorial CD's that I use in
my workshops and believe that the use of the Piezography process will
be a relevant addition to the next addition to my Black & White
tutorial CD. The CD's are described on the chbphoto.com website under
the education button.

Also, I was very impressed with the way you present your work on your
web site. Are you using a commercial shopping cart or is this
something you came up with yourself?

I've been looking for a good cart for the fhotografhy.com site.

I really would appreciate hearing from you on the above.

Good luck,

Chuck
