QTR + UT7 Inks..Two Important Questions

QTR + UT7 Inks..Two Important Questions

2005-06-30 by SteveZ

I'm presently using MIS UT7 ink carts for a 2200 using Paul
Roark's workflow (and his curves) for the Epson Driver. I wanted
to know:

Are there any advantages of using QTR with these inks and, If
so, what are they?

Also, can I use the QTR supplied curves when using these inks?

Your feedback is appreciated!

Paul's curves usually work really well. The advantage with QTR is that you
can blend the tones to something in between what's available with the
curves.

Printing with the Epson driver and the curves is much faster than QTR.

If you want to create your own curves QTR is the way to go. You have fine
grained control over every ink channel and can do absolutely anything you
want. Photoshop curves are much less intuitive and give you less control.
Either way there will be a learning curve.

QTR is great if you want to experiement with glossy printing and GLOP,
possibly with PKN as the black ink. I tried Paul's GLOP curves, but they
don't seem to reduce the bronzing enough. I believe you need full control
over the entire yellow channel to use the GLOP to its full potential. I have
made neutral and cool GLOP-curves for Ilford Smooth Pearl and Epson Premium
Semigloss.

I made the UT7 curves that come with QTR. They should work fine on EEM and
Photo Rag. Let me know if you run into any problems and I'll see if I can
improve them. I haven't got much feedback on them yet.

Daniel.... I'm not in front of my work computer right now, but as I recall, for 2200/UT7
there are only two supplied profiles. Warm EEM and Cool EEM. Are you saying that these
should work well for HPR as well as EEM?

Yes, those two papers behave very similar. But your opinion may differ. As I
said not many people have tested these curves so I don't know how well they
will work out for you.

I think I have a sepia curve lying around somewhere too...

Hi again... First off, I am a near-to-total newbie QTR user and don't know how to modify
the curves yet. That said, I've used the EEM warm and cool curves on HPR, printing at
2880, with an ink limit varying from -35 to -45, and the blend favoring the cool curve to
compensate for HPRs paper warmth. The results are pretty good, but of course I wonder if
they could be better if I were able to modify the curves.

I'd be grateful if you send me your sepia curve.

You can download my curves here:
http://download.petraflux.com/qtr_ut7_profiles.zip (21.9kb)

That also includes my UT7 PKN/GLOP curves.

It's really fun to create your own curves. The learning curve is a bit
steep, but once you know how it can take as little as a few minutes to
create a new curve.

Thanks Daniel.... :-) Do you have any recommendations for learning curve-making?
Links, etc.?

I'm very new at this. I was looking for help when I noticed this thread. I have been
exploring QTR with UT7 inks on the 2200. There were two profiles provided in the QTR
download for matte paper.
 1)UT7-EEM_cool
 2)UT7_EEM_warm
I printed out some 29 step grayscales {standard 21 step with additional steps at either end
to closely evaluate shadow and highlight regions). I printed these with various blends of
cool and warm. They uniformly exhibited what appeared visually to be very good tonal
separation. However there was one problem. In the 96% to 100% region there was severe
banding as well as a lightening of the tone. Nozzle and alignment checks were performed
prior to printing the grey scales.
I printed the greyscales useing Roark's Curves and this problem did not occur. I would
really like to continue with QTR. Does anyone have suggestions as to resolving this
difficulty. Any help will be very much appreciated.
