Hi Larry;
Tough call, this one. Doing what he needs with a 7600/9600 works
well because you have two K inks and a smaller dot size, so you can
get some very decent results with QTR leaving the color inks in it.
getting good b&w out of the older machine does mean a deicated
inkset, or trying to profile the color inks well enough to give you
neutral B&W. Even if you put the UC class inks in it, ( e.g.
Ultratones from MIS you will still have a very tough time of it IMO.
OTH, changing out the inks in that machine isn't as bad as it
sounds: you can pull the 'dampers' of each ink line, suck out the
old ink with a syringe and bottom-fill adaptor, and simultaneously
pull new ink in. You can do the whole process in under an hour once
you figure out what you're doing.
Best luck,
Steve Karafyllakis
